China allows US rice imports amid trade war

♪>>FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER AND IN A SIGN OF POSSIBLY THAWING RELATIONS, CHINA HAS SIGNALED IT IS OPEN TO IMPORTING RICE FROM AMERICA. RICH EDSON IS IN WASHINGTON WITH AN UPDATE.>>GOOD EVENING, JON, AND THAT’S ACCORDING TO THE CHINESE CUSTOMS OFFICE, THE LATERS IN A — THE LATEST IN A SERIES OF GESTURES BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES. THE U.S. RICE PRODUCERS CALL THIS ANNOUNCEMENT AN IMPORTANT MILESTONE IN A MORE THAN DECADE-HONG FIGHT TO SECURE ACCESS TO CHINESE CONSUMERS. IN A STATEMENT, U.S. RICE SAYS, QUOTE: AS WITH OUR ALL OUR DEALINGS WITH CHINA, THE DEVIL’S IN THE DETAILS, AND WE HAVE MANY QUESTIONS INCLUDING WHEN THE FIST SALES WILL BE MADE, BUT THIS IS DEFINITELY GOOD NEWS FOR OUR PRODUCERS AND MILLERS. CHINA STILL NEEDS TO ANNOUNCE A LIST OF AA PROVED AMERICAN RICE MILLS, IT’S ALMOST UNCLEAR HOW MUCH AMERICAN RICE CHINA WILL IMPORT. IT ALSO BUYS RICE FROM OTHER ASIAN COUNTRIES. THE U.S. AND CHINA HAD PREVIOUSLY RAISED TARIFFS ON HUNDREDS OF BILLIONS OF DOLLARS OF IMPORT ON EACH OTHER’S COUNTRIES, THEY’RE IN THE MIDDLE OF A 90-DAY NEGOTIATING WINDOW WHERE BOTH HAVE AGREED TO HOLD OFF ON INCREASES AND OFFER GOODWILL GESTURES. CHINA HAS SAID IT WOULD RESUME BUYING AMERICAN SOYBEANS. THAT NEGOTIATING PERIOD ENDS MARCH 1ST, THOUGH ADMINISTRATION OFFICIALS HAVE SAID THEY WOULD CONSIDER EXTENDING IT IF THE TWO COUNTRIES HAVE MADE ENOUGH PROGRESS. CHINESE AUTHORITIES SAY U.S. AND CHINESE NEGOTIATORS WILL HOLD THEIR FIRST FACE TO FACE MEETINGS NEXT MONTH SINCE PRESIDENT TRUMP AND CHINESE PRESIDENT XI JINPING MET EARLIER THIS MONTH IN ARGENTINA. THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION SAYS IT IS CONFRONTING CHINA’S RAMPANT INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY THEFT AND WHAT IT CALLS ABUSIVE TRADE PRACTICES. JON: THIS IS ONE OF MANY, MANY STEPS, BUT WE DON’T HAVE ANY QUANTITIES, WE DON’T HAVE ANY ORDERS. AT THIS POINT IT’S JUST AN OPEN DOOR, AND WE HAVE A LONG WAY TO GO.>>Reporter: EXACTLY, AND THIS HAS BEEN A NEGOTIATING POINT BETWEEN THE UNITED STATES AND CHINA FOR A DECADE NOW. IT’S A BIG STEP AT LEAST SPECIFICALLY TO RICE PRODUCERS, BUT THEY’RE EVEN SAYING THEY NEED TO SEE MORE FROM THE CHINESE GOVERNMENT BEFORE THEY CAN ACTUALLY START SELLING TO THAT BIG MARKET. JON: THANK YOU, RICH. JOINING ME NOW IS FOX NEWS CONTRIBUTOR FRED BARNES. FRED, GOOD TO SEE YOU.>>THANK YOU. JON: SO THESE TALKS ABOUT RICE IMPORTS GO BACK MANY, MANY YEARS TO SPECIFIC DISCUSSIONS THAT REALLY PREDATE THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION. DO YOU SEE THIS AS A VICTORY FOR HIS ADMINISTRATION OR JUST PART OF A LONG, ONGOING PROCESS?>>WELL, IT’S PART OF A LONG, ONGOING PROCESS, AND IT’S BEEN CALLED A GOODWILL GESTURE BY THE CHINESE. I DON’T THINK THE CHINESE WILL BE BRINGING A LOT OF GOODWILL WHEN THE TRADE TALKS RESUME IN JANUARY. THEY ARE TOUGH NEGOTIATORS. THEY DO NOT WANT TO LOSE THE ADVANTAGE IN TRADE THAT THEY HAVE WITH THE U.S. AND SO MANY OTHER COUNTRIES AROUND THE WORLD. AND PARTLY BECAUSE OF UNFAIR TRADE PRACTICES WHICH THEY PURSUE. I THINK THE U.S. DOES HAVE SOME ADVANTAGES HERE. REMEMBER — [LAUGHTER] REMEMBER, THERE ARE TWO ISSUES THAT TRUMP HAS BEEN TALKING ABOUT FOR DECADES, AND HE REALLY CARES ABOUT. ONE OF THEM, OF COURSE, IS IMMIGRATION, AND THE OTHER ONE IS TRADE. AND SO I THINK HE’S GOING TO BE A TOUGH NEGOTIATOR, AND HE’S HIRED ONE TO BE HIS CHIEF GUY, BOB LIGHTHIZER, WHO IS, I THINK, TOUGHER THAN ANY OF THE TRADE REPRESENTATIVES THAT OTHER PRESIDENTS HAVE HAD IN RECENT YEARS. JON: THIS SEEMS LIKE SORT OF A BABY STEP TO ME, FRED –>>EXACTLY. JON: NOT A LOT OF MEAT ON THE BONE. ARE YOU WORRIED THIS IS REALLY FLUFF? [LAUGHTER]>>WELL, I’M NOT NECESSARILY WORRIED, BUT I THINK IT IS FLUFF. I THINK YOU HAVE THAT QUITE CORRECTLY. AND, LOOK, IT JUST LOOKS LIKE SO MUCH MORE THAN IT IS. I DON’T THINK IT WILL CHANGE, REFLECT ANY CHANGE, ANY SOFTENING IN THE CHINESE TRADE PRACTICES OR THE WEIGHT THAT THE CHINESE NEGOTIATE THAN WE’VE SEEN BEFORE. THEY’LL BE AS TOUGH AND MEAN AS EVER. JON: WELL, YOU KNOW, THE CHINESE ARE COMING OFF A REALLY TOUGH QUARTER ECONOMICALLY. DO YOU THINK THAT CHANGES THE DYNAMIC OF THESE DISCUSSIONS AT ALL?>>WELL, THAT’S A GOOD QUESTION THAT I DON’T KNOW THE ANSWER OF. YOU WOULD THINK NORMALLY WITH ANOTHER COUNTRY AND MAYBE ANOTHER ISSUE IT WOULD, BUT WITH THE CHINESE I SUSPECT NOT. I MEAN, TRADE IS SO CRITICAL TO THEIR STATURE IN THE WORLD AND TO THEIR SELF-ESTEEM AND TO THEIR WEALTH AND POWER THAT I THINK THEY’RE GOING TO BE JUST AS HARD, AS HARD A PERSON TO BARGAIN WITH AS WE’VE EVER SEEN. JON: THESE PAST FEW WEEKS THE CHINESE HAVE TALKED ABOUT PHONE CALLS OVER THE HOLIDAYS AND PROGRESS BEING MADE ON THE PHONES AND AN UPCOMING MEETING IN JANUARY. DO YOU FEEL OPTIMISM IN THIS PROCESS? IT DOES SEEM TO BE MOVING AT A MORE ACCELERATED RATE.>>WELL, IT DOES. OPTIMISM, I WOULDN’T SAY THAT, BECAUSE THESE ARE STILL THE CHINESE, AND THESE THINGS THAT YOU TALKED ABOUT — THE PHONE CALLS AND SO ON — THEY DON’T AMOUNT TO MUCH. IF ANYTHING, THE CHINESE, OF COURSE, RECOGNIZE THIS IS THE STUFF THAT’LL GET IN THE AMERICAN PRESS, AND IT’LL LOOK LIKE, OH, BOY, ALL OF A SUDDEN WE’RE GETTING ALONG THERE. THIS IS GOING TO WORK OUT FINE. I THINK IT WILL WORK OUT TO AMERICA’S ADVANTAGE, BUT IT’S GOING TO TAKE AN AWFUL LOT, IT’S GOING TO TAKE A HUGE STRUGGLE, AND BOTH TRUMP AND HIS NEGOTIATOR, BOB LIGHTHIZER, ARE GOING TO HAVE TO WEATHER A LOT OF CRITICISM FROM THE MEDIA AND FROM AMERICANS AS THIS GOES ON. JON: YEAH, THIS IS GOING TO BE A

  1. Well where's the kuk stock market psychics at on this one. 🤣. And wait until tax return season. The stock market will be just fine.

  2. Why export your rice to China? When you can export that directly to the Philippines and it’s neighbors.China has no need for that much rice. They will just export that to its also to profit from it.

  3. So soybeans are being sold to China and Trump is still giving tax dollar subsidies to America farmers. Why's he always give our money away?

  4. Chinese have become increasingly aware of quality and pollution in the food supply. While it is the largest producer of rice, production in China is labor intensive. Many rice fields are terraced and thus cannot use mechanization to grow and harvest. Arable land in China is far less per person than many countries and much is polluted. There are different qualities of rice and the lower is used for animal feed. Far more fertilizer is used in rice production in China than the US which further causes pollution. Cost, quality, convenience and health issues make it common sense to buy American rice.

  5. I guess that basically it's a give and take. Among U.S. tariffs against China' goods, there are a great many examptions, so the actual tariff imposed on China is way less than publicly announced.

  6. China allows US rice imports, because we don't need it. We need soybean, the pig, but not US rice. US rice?? Wtf, taste bad. Thailand, Japan,…rice are good.
However, we can use US rice to make biscuits, dim sum, and export to US.

  7. Back when China was having the last famine, the USA sent rice to China. As China has something like 6000 varieties of rice, they thought the US rice was only good for animal food. We are NOT negotiating trade. We are stating what we need to level trade. China doesn't get it. We can just go on with the 25% import tariffs and add export tariffs until China wants to talk seriously. Either way works. China can import a lot while they are using up their three months. It will also give US factories in China a chance to open factories elsewhere and give US citizens and their families a chance to liquidate and return home. By the way, as China is selling off their US securities, which is used as currency for imports, they have no intention of increasing US imports. I'm not surprised as Communism has not changed, and China still cheats. They have the worst of all worlds. Even their high tech computer components are history. Thank you President Trump ! MAGA !!

  8. Ofc they are. China is completely dependent on food import. There is no chance that they are gonna win this trade war. Just sit back, make yourself comfortable and wait for it.

  9. I think this is really big actually. If Chinese people eat US rice, this means a lot for possible peaceful and cooperative future. It’s more than symbolic.

  10. Letting China win, that's a good tactic… the Trimp with the Shrimp Brain must have come up with that winning strategy.  China gets what it wants and Wall Street and the us$ still lose value.   You can always count on the conservatives to crash the economy, they got a 100% track record of failure in my lifetime.   Facts Matter !!

  11. Of course its a hoax. The trade balance is more than any single item. Its a collection of items that come out to 300 billion in deficits.

  12. America Is Importing Our Daily Wears & Cheap Appliances…..& China Is Importing Our Agriculture Goods…..Trade War With Communist China. American Will Be Naked & The Chinese Will Eat Grass…..Hahahahaha….:))

  13. I don't see the chinese having any thoughts towards not continuing this attempt at controlling the world resources and lining the rulers of china's own pockets even more. People don't matter in these people's eyes.

  14. The US is a world bully! Jealous of other countries’ rise and use violence to win competition! It’s desperately trying to maintain the dominance and superiority of the White race! Everyone of the colored people, wake up!!!!

  15. I was really surprised when China signal that China wouldn't allow Bush to meet with the Dalai Lama. I was like what were they thinking. Lol

  16. What happened China?? Xi certainly can't allow unfed peasants to rise up against the communist party! Xi looked pretty good at first but now he's hurting his people as China is losing the trade war. Meanwhile, America has full employment and gas prices continue to fall. Stay strong America and support the incredible Trump!!

  17. Faux News really should be called the Trump News Network. The idiotic trade war started by the man-baby in the WH has hurt American companies, especially those in Ag. Chinese imports of soybeans are down ~95% since the retaliatory tariffs were imposed but Faux News reports China possibly maybe someday in the future after more discussion might start importing more American produced rice as a win for djt's inept "policies". Obviously context and detail are not important.

  18. The tide has turned upside down. White ass will plant rice and brown ass will eat their produce. Work hard white ass, you need money that is what happened when you are about to bankrupt. Hahahhahaa

  19. China used to buy American agricultural products. If Trump has not started this stupid trade war, business as usual!!! Since when recovering an old business that American farmers used to have became an accomplishment?!?!

  20. US rice is dead cheap, what a good move by Chinese importers, tha prices are absolutely low by any standards, Chinese save millions…

  22. We can send them some Democrats that will really seal the deal. Hell send them some illegal Mexicans every country needs some of them.

  23. China needs the beans, or they will have no meat. They do NOT sell cars in the USA. They buy US cars, but they are made in china. Nothing here can be negotiated. We just need to level trade, or we need to keep tariffs. They also cheat.

  24. PLUM ISLAND RAIDED AND BIO GERM BANKS OPENED……AND PROVIDED TO THRE CHINESE HEALTH CARE PROVIDER………BASEBALL BATS AND ICE PICKS …NEEDED..PROTECT YOUR AMERICAN CHILDREN

  25. China can no longer feed it own population, its land is either too polluted to grow food, their water is too toxic to drink or to farm with. That's why China is buying land in Africa to grow food, buying a pork manufacturer in America. They import more food than anything, and rice is key.

  26. THEY WILL STEAL EVERYTHING AND ANYTHING FROM THE WORLD, BE WARE, THEY ARE MASTER OF CROOKS AND CON AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN !!! DO NOT LET THEM FOOL YOU WITH THE SHOT TERMS PROMISES AND INTEREST ☝️☝️☝️!!!
