What it’s like working at a facility that holds immigrant kids

They would go to sleep crying and we would ask them what’s going on and then we had one kid saying, “Oh, it’s because I
don’t know where my mom is,” and then we had another one and another
one that’s when we started noticing that we were getting kids that were being
separated from their parents. We had this kid, this is at night, he would um. He had a teddy bear with him, and he would always hug the teddy bear. But then he would
wake up and just be mad because they remember that it wasn’t his dad and he
would tell us, uh, that um. He would always hug his dad at night. The time it takes to get them into their um.
Whoever’s gonna be sponsoring them or whoever’s gonna be taking care of them,
the time frame it’s too long for them. We have too many kids and not enough staff. Sometimes it’s harder for so many kids inside a building. They go
outside once a day for an hour, an hour and a half.
Tell me about the the training overall. They try to teach you how to restrain,
how to talk to children, how to refer to them in a proper tone of voice. Did you
feel it prepares people? Honestly, no. When we deal with trauma or kids
that are trying to hurt themselves, not everybody’s prepared. Not everybody
is. They just, they don’t know what to do. We had a kid in um. Who, he just started walking from one, from one side of the building
to the other side of the building. Trying to get out, asking us, “I just want to go out, I just want to go out.” We got a counselor for him to talk to him but he just wouldn’t talk. He just started hitting his head against the wall. And we, we
try to stop him and everything. But we cannot restrain. We do twelve hour shifts. Or even more than twelve hour shifts. People leave because it’s too stressful. They would just get mad I mean, they don’t show it. The reason I don’t quit is because yes it’s a lot of stress. But you do something. You feel that that you are actually accomplishing something. I want the people to know about the program instead of everyone in there. Honestly we trying to get the kids to
get reunited. The most rewarding part of my job it’s um. When we tell the kid he’s
leaving already, and he needs to pack all his stuff. You could just see the joy on
the kid. It’s like they get their spirit back.

Trump suspends tariff threat, criticized for immigration deal with Mexico

COUNTRY. STEVE HARRIGAN, THANK YOU VERY MUCH. LELAND: ALL RIGHT, DEMOCRATIC RESPONSE ALL OF THIS WE EARLIER HEARD FROM REPUBLICAN, IS BEEN JOHN ROSE, WE BRING IN NEW JERSEY, SMITH, MEMBER OF HOUSE AGRICULTURAL COMMITTEE AND THE BLUE DOG COALITION, NICE TO SEE YOU, SIR. AS ALWAYS, APPRECIATED. YOU ARE A MEMBER OF THE PROBLEM SOLVERS COALITION AS I UNDERSTAND IT. PROBLEM SOLVED HERE FOR THE PRESIDENT? HE HAS GOT BIG AGREEMENTS FOR MEXICO TO DO STUFF TO TRY TO STOP THE FLOW OF MIGRANTS. AND NO TARIFFS, WHAT IS TO COMPLAIN ABOUT?>>I’M NOT COMPLAINING. IN FACT, IT MAY BE A LITTLE BIT OF AN UNUSUAL ELECTED OFFICIAL AND UNUSUAL CONGRESSMAN THAT I DO NOT TAKE PLEASURE WHEN SOMEONE ELSE FAILS, PARTICULARLY IN OUR GOVERNMENT. BECAUSE QUITE FRANKLY, IF THE PRESIDENT FAILS AT SOMETHING, THEN WE ALL FAIL IN THE COUNTRY. THIS SEEMS TO HAVE WORKED OUT. MEXICO SHOULD BE PART OF ANY AGREEMENT THAT WE HAVE. MEXICO SHOULD BE HELPING, MEXICO SHOULD BE PART OF THE PROCESS. THEY HAVE STRONG BORDERS THEMSELVES, THEY UNDERSTAND THE MEANING OF HAVING A BORDER AND I THINK THE FACT THAT THEY ARE NOW UNDERSTANDING THAT WE ARE SERIOUS ABOUT IT TOO IS HELPFUL. THIS WHOLE IMMIGRATION SITUATION FROM BEGINNING TO END HAS MANY PIECES TO IT. I BELIEVE THAT ALL OF IT COULD BE WORKED OUT. FOR THE FOLKS THAT ARE HERE AND UNDOCUMENTED, FOR THE DACA FOLKS, DREAMERS, AND ALSO FOR THE OPEN BORDERS, WE NEED TO DEAL WITH ALL OF THESE ISSUES AND IN A COMBINED WAY. MOST OF ALL, WE REALLY NEED TO HAVE A BETTER IMMIGRATION SYSTEM. THAT IS NOT A REPUBLICAN — LELAND: EVERYONE AGREES THAT THERE IS A PROBLEM, CONGRESSMAN. THE QUESTION, HOW TO GET THE ANSWER AS YOU POINT OUT, YOUR PERSPECTIVE ON THIS IS SHALL WE SAY, UNUSUAL. IN FACT I’VE NOT HEARD THEM DEMOCRATS SO FAR PRAISE THE PRESIDENT FOR HOW HE HAS DEALT WITH THE SITUATION VIS-C-VIS TARIFFS, MEXICO AND IMMIGRATION. IT BEGS THE QUESTION, WOULD YOU SUPPORT THE PRESIDENT GO TO THE BRINK AGAIN AND DO SUPPORT MEXICO TO THE BRINK WITH CHINA RIGHT NOW? ON TARIFFS, AND TRYING TO GET A BETTER DEAL FROM THE CHINESE AS WELL?>>EVERY SITUATION IS DIFFERENT. YOU HAVE TO EVALUATE THEM INDIVIDUALLY. THERE ARE THE DEMOCRATS I THINK WE SHOULD DO SOMETHING. SOME OF THE FOLKS IN THE BLUE DOGS, SOME OF THE FOLKS IN THE PROBLEM SOLVERS TEND TO BE MORE MODERATE. HE JUST CANNOT HAVE OPEN BORDERS WHERE ANYONE CAN COME IN ANYTIME. I LOVE IMMIGRATION, I BELIEVE IN IMMIGRATION. I BELIEVE IN LEGAL IMMIGRATION. AS FAR AS CHINA IS CONCERNED WE DO HAVE TO PLAY HARD BECAUSE CHINA WITHOUT QUESTION WAS TO BE THE NUMBER ONE POWER IN THE WORLD. AND AS YOU KNOW, THEY MANIPULATE THEIR MONEY AND THEY HAVE TECHNOLOGICALLY STOLEN A LOT OF WHAT WE HAVE. AND THEY HAVE CERTAINLY BEEN A FORCE HAS BEEN DIFFICULT TO DEAL WITH AND I THINK THAT WE HAVE TO SHOW THEM THAT WE ARE PLAYING FOR REAL. THAT WE WANT TO BE FAIR AND WHAT WE ALWAYS SAY, FAIR AND OPEN TRADE. I DO NOT WANT THE UNISYS ALWAYS GET THE SHORT END OF THE STICK.>>THE PRESIDENT SAID THE SAME THING. HE IS GONE CRITICISM FOR THE DEAL MADE WITH MEXICO TO AVOID THESE TARIFFS AND THAT THE LANGUAGE FROM THE MEXICANS LEAVES A LOT UNSPECIFIED IF THEY’RE GOING TO TAKE NEW AND DRASTIC MEASURES, THEY’RE GOING TO DO ALL OF THE THINGS BIT A LOT OF ADJECTIVES, NOT A LOT OF HARD FACTS AND FIGURES OTHER THAN 6000 TROOPS TO THE BORDER. DO YOU THINK THIS SHOWS STRENGTH TO THE CHINESE? DOES IT SHOW WEAKNESS AS THE CHINA PROBLEM SORT OF DWARFS THE MEXICO PROBLEM AS IT RELATES TO THE ECONOMICS OF THE COUNTRY?>>EVERY TIME WE SHOW STRENGTH, I THINK THAT IS ALWAYS GOOD IF IT IS –>>WAS A SHOWING STRENGTH OR THE PRESIDENT CAVED?>>NO, I MEAN I THINK IS SHOWING STRENGTH. AND I THINK WHETHER IT WAS A LONG TIME AGO WHEN TEDDY ROOSEVELT SAID SPEAK SOFTLY BUT CARRY A BIG STICK OR JFK, WE HAVE HAD, REPUBLICAN AND DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENTS THAT HAVE UNDERSTOOD AT TIMES, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA MUST SHOW WHAT I WILL CALL INTELLIGENCE STRENGTH. YOU HAVE TO BE THOUGHTFUL BUT WE HAVE TO SHOW THE STRENGTH. THIS IS A REAL ISSUE. CHINA AND RUSSIA ARE REAL ISSUES IN THE WORLD AND REALLY AND TRULY WANT TO MOVE FORWARD AND WANT TO BE THE POWERHOUSES OF THE WORLD. QUITE FRANKLY I THINK IT IS THEIT SHOULD BE. LELAND: CONGRESSMAN, WE THANK YOU. WE KNOW THAT YOU ARE ON THE AGRICULTURAL COMMITTEE WE HOPE TO GO TO THAT. NO MATTER WHAT POLITICAL PARTY PEOPLE ARE IN. WE THANK YOU FOR JOINING US PUTTING ON A SEAT WHILE IT IS NICE AND SUNNY OUTSIDE. WE HOPE YOU ENJOY THE REST OF THE DAY.

Brexit: ‘No deal is better than a bad deal’ says Theresa May

While both sides
want a deal, we have to face up
to the fact that, despite the progress
we have made, there are two
big issues where we remain
a long way apart. And I have always said
no deal is better than a bad deal. But I have also
been clear that the best
outcome is for the UK to leave
with a deal. As I told EU leaders,
neither side should demand the unacceptable
of the other. Throughout this process,
I have treated the EU with nothing but respect.
The UK expects the same. A good relationship
at the end of this process depends on it.

President of Colombia: We’ve had ‘immigration shock’ from Venezuela

TERRITORY, ALL THE STORIES COMING UP TUESDAY MORNING IN HALF AN HOUR, DEPUTY OF THE HOMELAND SECURITY ENDING CATCH AND RELEASE POLICIES NEXT WEEK, SECRETARY MAC ALEENA, IN THE DEPARTMENT WILL NO LONGER GO TO BORDER PATROL FACILITIES INTO THE U.S. POPULATION WHILE THEY AWAIT COURT HEARINGS, FAMILIES THAT CLAIM ASYLUM WILL BE BROUGHT TO ME BROUGHT TO MÉXICO AND OTHERS SENT BACK TO COUNTRY OF ORIGIN, JOINING ME RIGHT NOW THE PRESIDENT OF COLOMBIA EVAN DUQUE, MR. PRESIDENT, GREAT TO HAVE YOU ON THE PROGRAM.>>THANK YOU SO MUCH, PLEASURE TO BE HERE. MARIA: HAVE YOU SEEN IMPACT ON BORDERS IN AMERICA?>>NOT REALLY, WHEN WE EVALUATE THE MIGRATION POLICIES THROUGHOUT THE HEMISPHERE, EACH COUNTRY HAS OWN POLICY AND FACES ITS OWN CHARACTERISTICS AND IN OUR CASE AS WE WELL KNOW WE HAVE HAD MIGRATION SHOCK FROM THE VENEZUELAN BORDER, 1.4 MILLION VENEZUELANS THAT HAVE LEFT BECAUSE OF THE DICTATEORSHIP AND WE HAVE BEEN ABLE TO TREAT THEM WELL, BUT WHEN YOU HAVE SUCH A MIGRATION SHOCK IT’S HURTFUL. I THINK EACH COUNTRY HAS THE RIGHT AND THE INSTRUMENTS TO FACE EACH OF THE MIGRATION POLICIES. MARIA: LET ME ASK ABOUT VENEZUELA, U.S. ALLIES TO PRESSURE VEN’S PRESIDENT NICOLA PRESSURE VEN’S PRESIDENT NICOLÁS MADURO, YOU’RE SEEKING SANCTIONS ON VENEZUELA TO PROTECT THE WHOLE REGION, TELL ME ABOUT THAT, WHAT DO YOU WANT TO SEE DONE?>>LET ME CALL THINGS BY NAME, MADURO IS RESPONSE CERTIFYING TERRORISTS, THAT’S COME PAYABLE FROM WHAT WE SAW IN THE 2000’S AND TERRORIST REGIME SUPPORTING AL-QAEDA. THE WAY HE HAS BRUTALIZED HIS PEOPLE IS COMPARED TO WHAT — WE CALL THINGS BY THE NAME. WE HAVE TO PROTECT OUR BORDERS. RECIPAL ASSISTANCE THAT WAS VOTED YESTERDAY WAS A WAY IN WHICH COUNTRIES RECOGNIZED ALL THE THINGS THAT MAD INTRO IS — MADURO IS DOING TO COLOMBIAN, IF YOU EVER MAKE AN ATTACK, THE WHOLE REGION WILL PROTECT COLOMBIA THAT WAS VERY IMPORTANT COLOMBIA THAT WAS VERY IMPORTAN. MARIA: IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU ARE IN ALIGN WITH THE UNITED STATES AS WELL.>>YES, WE ARE, ACTUALLY WE SHARE VALUES AND WE SHARE PRINCIPLES. THE UNITED STATES AND COLOMBIA SIGNED THE INTERAMERICA DEMOCRATIC CHARTER, WE BELIEVE DEMOCRACY HAS TO BE DEFENDED AND MADURO HAS INDEPENDENT POWERS, HE HAS DESTROYED FREE MEDIA, ANY ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT IN VENEZUELA, YOU KNOW, NOW PEOPLE ARE SO IMPOVERISH THAT PEOPLE WANT TO GO OUT OF THE COUNTRY, LOST 4 MILLION PEOPLE IN LESS THAN 3 YEARS, IN COLOMBIA SUPPORTERS OF VENEZUELAN PEOPLE BUT WE HAVE DENOUNCED BRUTALITY AND BRUTALITIES. MARIA: HAVE YOU BEEN IN TOUCH WITH THE ADMINISTRATION ON THE U.S. OF A SIDE DEAL, PARTNERSHIP WITH THE UNITED STATES. WE HAVE A TRADE DEAL, WE HAVE A CLOSE RELATIONSHIP AND I THINK THE TRADE DEAL THAT WAS SIGNED IN 2012 HAS BEEN VERY IMPORTANT FOR BOTH COUNTRIES ALTHOUGH WE HAVE A TRADE DEFICIT WITH THE UNITED STATES, WE HAVE VERY IMPORTANT UNITED STATES INVESTMENT IN COLOMBIA AND IN MANY SECTORS, AND THE RISE OF FOREIGN DIRECT INVESTMENT IN THE LAST SEMESTER WHICH WAS ABOUT 24%, ONE OF THE TRIGGERS OF COLOMBIA’S HIGH-GROWTH THIS YEAR, WE COMPARED TO LATIN AMERICA BUT GROW 4.5%. COLOMBIA WILL GROW 3% AND THAT’S WORLD AVERAGE. WE HAVE TO KEEP INVESTMENT GOING AND I THINK THE UNITED STATES HAS BEEN NOT ONLY A STRATEGIC PARTNER BUT WE ALSO SEE A RELATIONSHIP AS RELATIONSHIP OF TRADE AND INVESTMENT. MARIA: MOVING TOWARD CORPORATE TAX CUT, TELL US ABOUT YOUR TAX LEGISLATION AND IMPACT.>>FOR MANY YEARS WHAT HAPPENED IN COLOMBIA, THE STATE WANTED TO SPEND MORE, EVERY SINGLE TIME THEY PASS SHED TO PRIVATE SECTOR, SO WHEN I ASSUMED OFFICE I SAID WE HAVE TO MAKE A CHANGE, WE GREW AT 1.4%, WE MADE THE REFORM AND REMOVED AGGREGATE TAXATION ON SMALL, MEDIUM-SIZE CORPORATIONS, OUT OF THAT WE GOT MORE INVESTMENT. THIS YEAR AS I SAID WE WILL GROW ABOUT 3%, SO THE SIGNALS ARE CLEAR, PEOPLE CAN INVEST, COLOMBIA IS SEEING NOW SAS THE PLACE IN LATIN AMERICA TO INVEST AND AT THE SAME TIME WE HAVE DEREGULATED MANY SECTORS, ELIMINATED RED TAPE AND WE HAVE MADE VERY WISE DECISIONS ON START-UPS FOR EXAMPLE, ZERO INCOME TAX FOR THE FIRST 7 YEARS FOR START-UPS OBVIOUSLY THEY HAVE TO WORK ON A MINIMUM AMOUNT OF INVESTMENT AND MINIMUM AMOUNT OF JOBS TO BE CREATED. SO WE ARE SEEING THAT — THAT DYNAMISM IN THE ECONOMY AND WE ARE PRETTY HAPPY. MARIA: ISN’T IT INTERESTING TO WHAT YOU’RE DOING IN TERMS OF POLICIES TO ENCOURAGE ECONOMIC GROWTH FOR EVERYBODY VERSUS THE SOCIALIST AND PRACTICES IN VENEZUELA? AT ONE POINT VENEZUELA WAS ONE OF THE MOST VIBRANT PLACES IN THE WORLD IN TERMS OF THEIR ECONOMY.>>WELL, YOU KNOW, WHEN I COMPARE COLOMBIA AND VENEZUELA OBVIOUSLY VENEZUELA HAS DICTATORSHIP BUT I’VE ALWAYS TRY TODAY DIFFERENTIATE TWO TYPES OF LEADERS IN LATIN AMERICA, DEMAGOGUES WHO ALWAYS, YOU KNOW, PROMISE THE HOLY LAND AND THEY END UP HAVING DISASTERS AND THE ARE THE ONES WHO TELL THE PEOPLE WHO ARE THE RIGHT THING TO DO EVEN IF IT’S NOT POPULAR AT THE BEGINNING AND IN OUR CASE THE TRANSFORMATION OF COLOMBIA DEMONSTRATES THROUGH SOUND POLICIES, LOWER DEFICITS, MORE INVESTMENT, SUPPORTING THE PRIVATE SECTOR THAT WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE. MARIA: THANK YOU FOR THAT I WANT TO TALK ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT, YOU’RE HERE AT THE UN GENERAL ASSEMBLY, WE ARE THE WORLD IS WATCHING PICTURES OF THE AMAZON, YOU HAVE THE 16-YEAR-OLD CLIMATE ACTIVIST POINTING THE FINGER AT WORLD LEADERS, SHE BLAMES THEM FOR IGNORING CLIMATE CHANGE, HERE IS WHAT SHE SAID YESTERDAY.>>YOU HAVE STOLEN MY CHILDHOOD WITH YOUR EMPTY WORDS, PEOPLE ARE SUFFERING, PEOPLE ARE DYING. ENTIRE SYSTEMS ARE COLLAPSING, HOW DARE YOU? MARIA: WHAT A PERFORMANCE IN TERMS OF FEELINGS BLAMING YOURSELF AND OTHER LEADERS ACROSS THE WORLD, WHAT DO YOU SAY TO THAT.>>FIRST OF ALL WE CALLED ACTION ON PROTECTING FOREST AND I ATTENDED THE SUMMIT. SPEECHES TO ACTIONS, WHEN YOU LOOK AT A COUNTRY LIKE COLOMBIA, REPRESENTS 0.4% OF GLOBAL GROAN HOUSE’S EMISSIONS, 6 CHAINEST METRICS IN THE WORLD, 50% OF THE WORLD AND WE HAVE 35% OF OUR CONTINENTAL SOIL AS AMAZONNIC, SO THOSE FACTS MIGHT SAY, WELL, COLOMBIA IS NOT PART OF THE PROBLEM, HOWEVER, WE ALL HAVE TO ENGAGE, THAT’S THE REASON WE ARE MAKING AN URGENCY ACTION IN COLOMBIA, 10% OF NONCONVENTIONAL RENEWABLES IN 2022, WE WANT TO GET TO 20% IN 2030, WE HAVE DEFORESTATION 17% IN THE FIRST YEAR, THAT’S THE REASON WE ARE PUSH TO GO ELECTRIC VEHICLE NOT ONLY THE BILL BUT THE IMPLEMENTATION, THAT’S WHY WE ARE TALKING ABOUT CIVIL PASSENGERS, WE ARE MAKING BIG EFFORTS AND AS I SIDE YESTERDAY, CLIMATE CHANGE IS BIGGEST ISSUE OF OUR TIME, WE MUST ALL WORK TOGETHER AND WE MUST ALSO INVOLVE THE PRIVATE SECTOR, SO LET ME GIVE YOU ONE EXAMPLE, MARIA N COLOMBIA, WE DECIDED THAT YOU CAN DEDUCT 50% IN THE CORPORATE INCOME TAX ANY INVESTMENT THAT YOU HAVE MADE ON ENERGY EFFICIENCY AND RENEWABLE ENERGY, SO WE BELIEVE THAT THE WHOLE AMOUNT OF POLICY THAT WE HAVE IMPLEMENTED ARE PRODUCING THE IMPACT, COLOMBIA IS HIGHLY POLITTED TO THE PARIS TREATMENT AND WE REALLY WANT TO BE CARBON NEUTRAL BY 2050. MARIA: WOW, DO YOU THINK THAT THE WORLD IS ALIGNED AGAINST CHINA AND ITS PRACTICES WHEN IT COMES TO POLLUTION IN THE AIR?>>I THINK THE WHOLE WORLD MUST RECOGNIZE THAT THERE ARE TWO REALITIES, THERE WAS THE REALITY OF MANY COUNTRIES THAT GOT TO BE DEVELOPED WITHOUT PERMIT IN ENVIRONMENT AND DEVELOPING COUNTRIES THAT HAS TO RIGHT TO DEVELOP BUT THEY HAVE TO DO IN HARMONY WITH THE PROTECTION OF THE ENVIRONMENT, NO DEVELOPMENT CAN BE REACHED TODAY IF YOU’RE AFFECTING THE ENVIRONMENT, SO I THINK THE WHOLE CALL NOT ONLY TO CHINA, COLOMBIA, TO ANY COUNTRY IN THE WORLD, IN THE G7 WE NEED TO HARMONIZE WITH THE PROTECTION ON THE ENVIRONMENT, THE PROTECTION ON THE FORESTS, THE PROTECTIONS ON THE OCEANS, NOW THERE’S A WORLD CONSCIOUS AND WE ARE MAKING A BIG BET THAT WE TRAIN THE KIDS IN SCHOOLS WITH THE ETHICS — MARIA: YEAH.>>WE ALL HAVE TO BE CONSCIOUS ON HOW TO ACT AND PROTECT THE ENVIRONMENT. MARIA: YOU’VE OBVIOUSLY GOT A GREAT GRASP IN GROWTH AND LEADING YOUR COUNTRY, WHAT CAN YOU SAY TO INVESTORS ABOUT CORRUPTION AND THOSE PEOPLE WHO WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT THIS IS SOMETHING THAT’S WATCHED AND — AND HANDLED AND REVERSED?>>WHEN I WAS — WHEN I WAS WORKING AT THE BANK IN MY PREVIOUS LIFE, I WAS A THINKER THAT SAYS CORRUPTION MEANS MONOPOLY AND LESS TRANSPARENCY, WHAT DO WE NEED TO DO, ELIMINATE THE MONOPOLIES OF INFORMATION INSIDE GOVERNMENT, ELIMINATE SO MUCH DISCRETIONALTY AND INCREASE THE LEVELS OF TRANSPARENCY. WHAT CAN BE AN INSTRUMENTAL TOOL, TECHNOLOGY. SO WITH BLOCK CHAIN, TECHNOLOGY, AGGREGATED DATABASES WE CAN BE MORE EFFICIENT SO THAT EVERYBODY COULD SCRUTINIZE THE WAY THE STATE CONTRACT OR HOW THE STATE ACTS. SO IN COLOMBIA WE HAVE MOVED IN THAT DIRECTION TO HAVE MORE TRANSPARENCY, WE’VE ALSO ISSUED A BILL SO THAT EVERY SINGLE HIGH OFFICIAL IN GOVERNMENT HAS TO MAKE PUBLIC THEIR TAXES FILINGS SO THAT PEOPLE CAN MONITOR AND SCRUTINIZE HOW THEY HAVE BEHAVED, HOW THEIR ASSETS HAVE BEHAVED WHILE IN OFFICE AND ALSO WHAT WE WANT TO DO THIS YEAR SO TO BE ABLE TO BLOCK CHAIN, TO IDENTIFY MAYBE ON REGULAR MOVEMENTS AND WHEN WE SEE THAT THERE ARE PEOPLE THAT ARE NOT FILING THE INFORMATION THEY SHOULD AND THEN MORE EFFICIENT TO FIGHT CORRUPTION AND WE ARE ALSO PROMOTING AS COLOMBIA INSIDE THE U, IN THAT WE SHOULD HAVE A GLOBAL ANTICORRUPTION COURT SPECIFICALLY TO TACKLE THE — THE INTERREGIONAL — INTERREGIONAL CORRUPTION SCHEMES LIKE THE ONES WE SAW WITH SOME COUNTRIES THAT CREATED SCANDALS IN LATIN AMERICA. MARIA: REALLY IMPORTANT INSIGHTS FROM YOU, MR. PRESIDENT, THANK YOU.

Trumpdates: Murky Mexico Deal, Love Notes from North Korea & Bitter Words for Biden | The Daily Show

Donald Trump. This has been a wild week
for the Trump presidency, making it the 124th
wild presidency week in a row. It started a few days ago, when Trump averted a crisis
of his own making by deciding not
to impose tariffs on Mexico because he said he made a deal. However, critics pointed out that many of the things
that Mexico promised to do to stop illegal immigration
were the same promises that they had made
months before. But then Trump came back saying that he had a secret deal
with Mexico, which no one believed. So, yesterday, he did this. -Can you tell us?
-What is that? That’s the agreement that
everybody says I don’t have. So, no, because I’m gonna let
Mexico do the announcement -at the right time.
-(reporters clamoring) For Mexico,
they want to go through it. But here’s the agreement.
It’s a very simple agreement. (laughter) Okay. Okay. There are
two possibilities here. And neither of them are good. Either the president
just whipped out a takeout menu and claimed it’s
a secret agreement with Mexico– which it could be– or it’s a real agreement and the president
is just walking around with secret documents
in his pocket. Right? The same guy
who was worried about Hillary’s server
getting hacked by Russians. Meanwhile, he could get hacked
by a gust of wind. Or, even worse, a pigeon. Could just be like,
“And here it is, “the secret document that… “Aah! Stop that pigeon! “Stop that pigeon! It’s headed to the Kremlin!” Like,
keeping important documents in your jacket pocket
is so risky, because everyone forgets things in that pocket.
We’ve all done it. Like, one day, Trump’s
dry cleaner’s gonna phone the White House, like,
“Hey, Mr. Trump, “you left the nuclear codes
in your jacket again. And there’s a lollipop
in there, too.” He’s like, “Oh, thank God.
My lollipop.” So that was President Trump
showing off his “secret agreement” letter
that he got from Mexico. Uh, and I guess yesterday
was mail day, because, a few minutes later
in the press conference, he was telling us
about another letter he was even more proud of. REPORTER: For the first time
since the failed Hanoi Summit, Kim Jong-un sent the president
a letter yesterday, Mr. Trump downplaying concerns about Kim’s recent
missile tests. He’s kept his word. There’s no nuclear testing. There’s no large, you know,
long-range missiles going up. So, uh, I see that. And I just received a beautiful
letter from Kim Jong-un. And I think
the relationship is very well, but I appreciated the letter. Someday, you’ll see
what was in that letter. Someday you’ll be reading
about it. Maybe in 100 years from now,
maybe in… two weeks. Who knows? But it was a very nice letter. It was a very warm,
very nice letter. I appreciated it. What? Maybe 100 years from now,
maybe two weeks? The only other time you hear
a time range that big is when you order a couch
online. It’s like, “Yeah, I guess… uh, it’ll be arriving now
or never.” But that’s pretty incredible,
right? Trump is willing
to support Kim Jong-un because the North Korean
dictator sends him sweet notes. You know,
if Kim Jong-un is smart, he would launch a missile
at the United States and then just send Trump
a letter at the exact same time to keep him distracted. Yeah. An aide would run
into the office, like, “Mr. Trump, Kim Jong-un
has just fired…” “Fired off
a beautiful letter to me. I know. It’s gorgeous.” “No, sir,
this could devastate…” “Devastate Melania. We won’t tell her.
Don’t worry.” “No, sir, people are dying.” “Dying to know what’s in it. “But I can’t tell them.
It’s a secret. “It’s between me and… “Goddamn you, pigeon!
Goddamn. How did it get back
from the Kremlin so fast?” (laughter) So Donald Trump has become, uh,
good friends with Mexico, and, uh, he’s BFF
with little Kim. But there’s one feud the
president is not willing to end, and it’s with America’s
greatest enemy, Sleepy Joe. Well, I heard Biden, uh,
who is a loser… I mean, look, Joe never got
more than one percent, except Obama took him off
the trash heap, and now it looks
like he’s failing. He looks different
than he used to. He acts different
than he used to. He’s even slower
than he used to be. I’d rather run against,
I think, Biden than anybody. Uh, I think
he’s the weakest mentally. And I like running against
people that are weak mentally. I think
Joe is the weakest up here. Really, Donald? You want to compete
with a mentally-weak loser? Well, then maybe you should
hold a debate with a mirror. -(air horn sounds)
-(cheers and applause) Now, it’s no coincidence that, uh, Trump is going after
the former V.P., right? Ever since the polls came out showing Biden beating Trump
all over the country, Trump has aimed all
of his attacks directly
at his number-one threat. And Joe Biden is loving it, because it’s setting him up
as the presumptive nominee, which is why yesterday in Iowa, he delivered a 40-minute speech that was all about Trump. I don’t think the president
really gets the, uh… gets the basics. Uh, he thinks these tariffs
are being paid by China, just like he thinks Mexico’s
building the wall. Um… He thinks
windmills cause cancer. Now, look, you think
I’m making this up, I know. Quote, “I have complete power.” -No, you don’t, Donald Trump.
-(applause and cheering) Or, “Only I can fix it.” Fix yourself first,
Donald Trump! (cheers and applause) Oh, okay, that was…
that was weird. I feel like Joe Biden turned
black by the end of that speech. “‘Only I can fix it!’
No, fix yourself Donald Trump. Mike Pence,
you better come get your man!” (laughter) And I’ll be honest. I don’t know if this was
an effective campaign speech that would convince
a swing voter. What I do know is, Joe Biden just got a brand-new
stand-up special deal on HBO. ♪ ♪ I don’t think the president
really gets the, uh… gets the basics. Uh, he thinks these tariffs
are being paid by China, just like he thinks
Mexico’s building the wall. -Um…
-(laughter) What is… President Trump…? He denies
there’s climate change. What did he tell Piers Morgan
in an interview recently? He said,
“Well, weather goes both ways.” (laughter) You know, look, he thinks
windmills cause cancer. Now, look, you think
I’m making this up, I know. He said, “Those California
fires– what they got to do is rake their leaves.” (laughter) I’m not joking!
I’m not making this up! Joe Biden, everybody.

Self-Employed Income & Sponsoring an Alien

(upbeat rock music) – I have my own business but
deducted a lot last year, due to the new addition to my business, so it looks like I
didn’t make enough money. But I’ve got bank statements this year, and I’ve made enough money. Will it be okay to be a co-sponsor? Okay, that’s a extremely common question. You know, as a self-employed individual or person who owns a
business, you are going to try to take advantage
of all the write-offs you can get to reduce your
taxable income, right? It makes sense. You have every right to do it. Unfortunately, though,
for CIS and tax purposes, your income is basically
what you pay taxes on. Now, there’s some oddball exceptions for people who have non-taxable
income and various things. But in your circumstance,
whatever you’ve paid tax on is your income. So, if you were effectively
able to reduce your income down to a very low level or even zero, or it could even be negative,
then you have no income. And there’s no changing those facts. So, your options are to
use assets or to amend your tax return to claim enough income to get you over the limit. You know, like, change it so that you show 30,000 in tax, in income. You’ll have to pay tax on that, but that is a tactic
that people have done, is gone back and amended their income tax, even after they’ve filed it. But no, it’s not possible to say, “Hey, look, IRS, I actually made 100,000, “but I had 80,000 in deductions; “and this is why I only reported 20,000, “but really I made good money.” It won’t work. Everybody’s tried it. If you didn’t pay tax on it, you’re not gonna be able to claim it. And that’s the hard
answer, but I’m a save you a lot of heartache by
trying to get around that. Everybody’s tried it. People try it with lawyers. People try it with accountants. Bottom line is, your
income available to support the immigrant’s what they’re looking for. If you say you spent it
on furniture, fixtures, whatever on your business, then it’s not, in their view, it’s not
available to support the alien. You coulda had, you know, a
million dollars in revenue. They don’t care about your revenue at all. There’s no point in even mentioning it. All that matters is your
income at the end of the days, that you’re taking home
and you’re paying taxes on. So, you know, unfortunately,
income’s one of the areas where there is no wiggle room. It’s gotta be exactly
right, and they’re not gonna take your word for
anything, unfortunately. (upbeat music)

Let’s Make a Deal: Mexico Edition | The Daily Show

Trump versus Mexico. Last week, the battle over
immigration escalated when Trump threatened
to impose tariffs on Mexico, -and even cancel Taco Tuesdays.
-(audience reacts) It’s crazy that the Constitution
gives him that power. But, luckily, over the weekend,
this happened. TV REPORTER: No Monday morning
tariffs on Mexico. After President Trump clinched
an 11th-hour immigration deal for tougher enforcement, tweeting “There is now going
to be great cooperation between Mexico and the U.S. TV REPORTER:
President Trump announcing that the U.S. and Mexico
reached an agreement, averting a potential
economic crisis. Yes! Crisis averted. Thank you, Trump. You realize this could have
tanked the stock market, it could have seriously hurt
the U.S. economy, but Trump stopped it
from happening. And, yes, he was the one who
caused the crisis to begin with, but that’s not the point. -That’s not the point.
Don’t hate. -(applause) That’s right.
Give it up for Trump. -Give it up for Trump. Yeah!
-(cheers and applause) That’s what I love
about this guy. Anyone can be a good guy.
Anyone can be a bad guy. Not everyone can be both, huh? Yeah. He’s Bruce Willis and the guys that have taken
the building hostage. That’s who he is. He’s the kind of guy who starts
the timer on the bomb, then turns around, is like,
“Jesus, this sicko only gave us three minutes.
We got to get out of here.” People are like, “Why did you set the bomb
in the first place?” “It’s called tension, folks.” Now, as part of the new deal, Trump says that Mexico is gonna increase troops
at the border, crack down on human smuggling and throw him that quinceañera
that he’s been asking for. Yes. (speaking Spanish) (laughter) The point is,
the point is Trump made a deal. The only thing is it may not actually be
a new deal. Despite President Trump touting
the agreement as a “new deal,” just how new the terms are,
well, that’s up for debate. The New York Times reports that
Mexico had previously agreed to deploy its national guard during high-level secret talks
back in March. Man, you know what?
This is just straight-up hating from The New York Times, huh? Focusing on when the deal
was actually made. Who cares if Trump’s new deal
is actually an old deal? The point is it happened. “Well, when did it happen?” New York Times reminds me
of my landlord, always focusing
on when I paid the rent. “Trevor, when are you
gonna pay the rent?” I paid you last month! What, is this gonna happen
every month? I feel like this is blackmail. And you know what? Who cares if Trump is taking an old deal
and pretending it’s new? It’s what Hollywood
has been doing for years, huh? Aladdin. Pet Sematary. Dumbo. It always works. Okay, well, not always works, ’cause one time I pitched
my live-action Tetris movie starring The Rock
as the “L” thingy, and then Steven Spielberg
told me to “get out of his bedroom.” Whatever that means. Now, the question is, why
would Trump cancel his tariffs if Mexico didn’t really give him
anything new? Well, maybe it’s because
things at home were getting muy caliente. The White House faced
some pretty stiff resistance from Republicans
as well as business leaders -on all of this.
-Right. You had Politico reporting about a closed-door lunch
on Tuesday. You had a couple of
Trump administration officials who tried to lay out
the president’s view, but they reportedly only faced
brutal pushback from the GOP, with some threatening
that Trump could actually face a veto-proof majority
to overturn the tariffs. Wow, this is deep. So, Trump
was threatening Mexico, and Mexico was, in turn,
threatening U.S. businesses, and then U.S. businesses
were threatening the GOP, and then the GOP
was threatening Trump. Goddamn. He was always gonna lose this. You never get into
a Mexican standoff with actual Mexicans. It’s too risky. It’s like French-kissing
an actual French person. They will bust the tongue right
through the back of your head. You can’t risk that shit. (laughter and applause) But before you guys hate
on Trump and say that he didn’t get
anything major out of this deal, you’re forgetting one thing. But it’s a secret. NEWSMAN:
President Trump now saying a secret part of the deal
still hasn’t been announced, tweeting the U.S. has
a fully signed and documented part of the deal with Mexico that will be revealed
in the not too distant future. Ooh! A secret deal. This is so exciting. Like, I wonder what it is, huh? (gasps) What if America
is making Mexico the 51st state? Huh? That could be the new deal. Be like, “Folks, they can’t
sneak into the country “if they’re already
in the country. “Problem solved. “I did it. I did it. Yeah.” (applause) I also love how Trump provided
zero details about this deal. Yeah, this is why Trump
is a “G,” man. He knows that the best way
to entice someone is to keep it vague. He probably learned that
from R&B singers. Yeah, ’cause they don’t tell you
exactly what they do. They just give it to you
like, “Girl, you know that thing you want?
Well, I’m gonna give it to you.” It’s like, “What is that?” “Well, I ain’t
gonna tell you, girl, but you gonna find out,
and when you do…” (vocalizing) “Well, when are you
gonna give it to me?” “Damn, girl, who cares?
What are you, my landlord? Calm down.”

WORKFORCE. SHELLY: AND MORE THAN 7 1/2
MILLION OF THEM

UNDOCUMENTED IMMIGRANTS, SOME
PEOPLE CALL THEM IRREGULAR

THEM ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS.>>A LOT OF THE PEOPLE WHO ARE
UNAUTHORIZED IN FACT HAVE
DOCUMENTS. SHELLY: THERE ARE ALSO
MISCONCEPTIONS
ABOUT THE INDUSTRIES EMPLOYING
THOSE WORKERS, AND WHETHER THEY
PAY TAXES. DOUG: TONIGHT, IN A “PROJECT

WORKING WITH PEOPLE ON ALL SIDES

ISSUE, TO BRING YOU THE TRUTH
ABOUT IMMIGRANTS IN THE WE’RE GOING TO TAKE YOU FROM THE
FARMS AND RANCHES, TO THE

WE

ALWAYS INTERESTED IN THE LATEST
WAY OF DOING LIKE
VACCINATIONS. EQUIPMENT THAT THEY DON’T HAVE
THERE FOR WORKING SHEEP, THEY
ARE ALWAYS INTERESTED IN
THAT. AND THEY ARE JUST REAL GOOD AT
WHAT THEY DO. MARISSA: THE WORKERS AT TAYLOR

ON H2A VISAS, THESE ALLOW
FOREIGN NATIONALS TO ENTER THE
UNITED STATES FOR TEMPORARY OR
SEASONAL AGRICULTURE WORK. AND BECAUSE OF THE HIGH DEMAND
FOR SHEEP HERDERS IN THE
U.S. THERE’S A SPECIAL CLASSIFICATION

PAPERWORK.>>THE LANDOWNER, THE RANCHER,
THE
FARMER, WHOEVER IT IS, SIGNS UP
WITH DEPARTMENT OF LABOR AS A
SPONSOR. AND YOU’RE RESPONSBILE FOR THOSE
PEOPLE WHEN YOU GET THEM AND GET
THEM HERE. MARISSA: THE PAPERWORK TO BRING
OVER
WORKERS HAS TO GO THROUGH NOT
JUST THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF LABOR, BUT ALSO
THE UNITED STATES CITIZENSHIP
AS THE U.S. DEVELOPMENT.>>NOW THERE ARE CORPORATIONS,
COMPANIES, ASSOCIATIONS,
THROUGHOUT THE SOUTHWEST THAT I

YOUR PAPERWORK. THAT’S ALL THEY DO. AND SO WE RELY ON THEM TO GET
OUR PAPERWORK
WHERE IT NEEDS TO BE, AND TIMELY

IT’S GIVEN TO AN IMMIGRANT.>>OUR EXPERIENCE IS THE LOCALS

THE MONEY THAT THEY EARN HERE IS
SO MUCH MORE THAN WHAT THEY CAN
EARN WHERE THEY COME FROM AND
THEY DON’T WANT TO LOSE THOSE
JOBS. MARISSA: JOBS THAT BRING
SECURITY FOR
WORKERS LIKE EDISON AND

WHAT SPARKED A MAJOR WAVE OF
IMMIGRATION IN NEW NEW MEXICO
DECADES AGO. IN THE 1940’S, SO MANY AMERICANS
WERE SERVING OUR COUNTRY SO THE
BRACERO PROGRAM WAS CREATED. IT WAS A WAY FOR MILLION OF
MEXICAN IMMIGRANTS TO COME TO
THE UNITED STATES TO MEET FOOD
SUPPLY DEMANDS DURING THE
WAR. IT CAME WITH CRITICISM. MANY PEOPLE SAID WORKERS WEREN’T
TREATED FAIRLY AND WEREN’T PAID
WELL. BUT HISTORIANS SAY IT WAS A
PROGRAM THAT KEPT AGRICULTURE
MOVING FORWARD DURING WORLD WAR
II. THE PROGRAM BROUGHT ABOUT 4.6
MILLION WORKERS TO THE UNITED
STATES AND MANY STAYED.>>A LOT OF THEM WERE SO WELL
LIKED, AND DID SUCH WONDERFUL
JOBS, THEY WENT BACK TO PLACES
THEY HAD WORKED BEFORE, AND
FREQUENTLY THOSE PLACES BECOME
— BECAME SPONSORS.>>YOU CANNOT OVERLOOK THE
CONTRIBUTION OF MEXICANS TO
AMERICAN SOCIETY. SHELLY: THE BRACERO PROGRAM
EXISTED BACK
BEFORE THE TERM VISA WAS
USED. TO COME WORK IN THE UNITED
STATES. MANY FARMERS THINK A SIMILAR
SYSTEM TODAY WOULD HELP WITH
AGRICULTURE NEEDS IN NEW MEXICO. DOUG: THE UNITED STATES
AGRICULTURE
SECRETARY SAYS A NEW GUEST
WORKER PROGRAM COULD BE A
SOLUTION TO ILLEGAL
IMMIGRATION. HE SAYS MANY OF THE PEOPLE
WORKING ILLEGALLY IN THE UNITED
STATES ARE DOING IT JUST TO HAVE
WORK AND THEY DON’T REALLY WANT
TO BE CITIZENS. SHELLY: SECRETARY SONNY PERDUE
WAS AT A
ALBUQUERQUE WHEN HE SAID A LEGAL
GUEST WORKER PROGRAM COULD STOP
THE FLOW OF SO MANY PEOPLE
COMING INTO THE UNITED STATES ILLEGALLY. HE SAID THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION
IS WORKING TO STREAMLINE THE
H2A VISA PROGRAM THAT ALREADY
ALLOWS FOR AGRICULTURE WORKERS
IN THE UNITED STATES. HE SAYS PEOPLE IN SOUTHERN NEW
MEXICO COULD BENEFIT FROM A GUEST WORKER PROGRAM. DOUG: FOR MOST OF THE ADULTS
COMING TO
THE U.S., LEGALLY OR NOT, THEIR
MAIN REASON FOR MAKING THE MOVE
IS FINDING WORK.>>IF WE LOOK AT WORKING AGE MEN
AND WOMEN, ROUGHLY 18 TO 64,
OVER 90% OF THE MEN ARE IN THE
WORKFORCE AND THAT COMPARES TO
ABOUT 79% OF U.S. NATIVES. DOUG: WHEN IT COMES TO
UNEMPLOYMENT,
JUST OVER 7% OF IMMIGRANTS WHO
CAME TO THE U.S. THE PAST FIVE
YEARS ARE UNEMPLOYED. THAT’S COMPARED TO JUST UNDER 4%
FOR LONGER-TERM IMMIGRANTS, WHO
HAVE BEEN HERE FOR MORE THAN 10
YEARS. SINCE 2010, UNEMPLOYMENT HAS
DROPPED SIGNIFICANTLY BOTH
SHORT-TERM AND LONG-TERM
IMMIGRANTS. AS FOR HOW MUCH MONEY THEY’RE
MAKING, IMMIGRANTS WHO CAME TO
THE U.S. IN THE PAST FIVE YEARS, HAD A
MEDIAN ANNUAL INCOME OF $24,000. THOSE WHO HAVE BEEN FOR MORE
MORE THAN 10 YEARS EARN ABOUT
$32,000 A YEAR. SHELLY: AN INTERESTING
DIFFERENCE
THOUGH, THE RECENT ARRIVALS MAKE
LEVELS OF EDUCATION. THIS IS OPPOSITE OF THE U.S. POPULATION, WHERE WORKERS WITH A
HIGHER EDUCATION ON AVERAGE MAKE
MORE. THE EDUCATION LEVELS OF
IMMIGRANTS HAVE SEEN A CONSTANT
RISE OVER THE PAST 60 YEARS. ACCORDING TO THE PEW RESEARCH
INSTITUTE IN 1960, JUST 2.1% OF
— 2.5% OF IMMIGRANTS HAD A
BY THE YEAR 2000, THAT NUMBER
WAS CLOSE TO
FOURTEEN%. AND IN THE 2017, JUST ABOUT 18%
OF IMMIGRANTS IN THE
AND MORE THAN 13% HAD A
POST-GRADUATED DEGREE. THE LARGEST INCREASES ARE SEEN
AMONG IMMIGRANTS FROM ASIA,
EUROPE, AND THE MIDDLE EAST. DOUG: WHILE A LOT OF
UNDOCUMENTED
MIGRANTS WORK IN FARMING, THE
RANGE OF INDUSTRIES THEY WORK IN
IS ACTUALLY QUITE LARGE. PEW RESEARCH SHOWS ALONG WITH
FARMING CONSTRUCTION,
PRODUCTION, SERVICE AND
TRANSPORTATION ARE THE
INDUSTRIES WITH THE HIGHEST
AMOUNT OF UNDOCUMENTED WORKERS. LESS THAN TWO% IN THE WORKFORCE
ARE MANAGERS OR WORK IN
PROFESSIONAL OFFICE TYPE
JOBS.>>A LOT OF THEM WORK IN
CONSTRUCTION, A LOT IN SERVICE
INDUSTRY. THEY ARE WORKING IN A WHOLE
RANGE OF OCCUPATIONS, BUT MOSTLY
THE OCCUPATIONS WITH THE MOST
UNAUTHORIZED WORKERS ARE
ROOFERS, GARDNERS, PEOPLE
WORKING IN FOOD PROCESSING PLANTS. DOUG: SERVICE JOBS EMPLOY THE
LARGEST
TOTAL NUMBER OF UNAUTHORIZED
IMMIGRANTS WITH 2.4 MILLION
WORKERS IN 2016. SHELLY: THE MILLIONS OF WORKING
IMMIGRANTS FILL VITAL ROLES IN
OUR COUNTRY. MANY BUSINESS OWNERS WE FOUND
SAY WITHOUT THESE PEOPLE, SOME
OF THE WORK COULDN’T GET
DOUG: AND WHEN IT COMES TO
UNAUTHORIZED WORKERS, BUSINESSES
ARE TAKING A RISK, KNOWING WHAT THEY’RE DOING IS ILLEGAL. ARMAS EXPLAINS WHY MANY SAY THE
RISK IS WORTH IT. MARISSA: IT’S HAPPENING
EVERYWHERE.>>I THINK YOU’D SEE IT ACROSS
VIRTUALLY EVERY SPECTRUM OF WORK
IN THE UNITED STATES, THAT ARE
TYPICALLY LOW SKILLED. MARISSA: YET NO ONE WANTS TO
TALK ABOUT
IT.>>FOR EXAMPLE RESTAURANTS,
WHERE
YOU NEED A LINE COOK, A
DISHWASHER, A BUSER,
CLEANING SERVICES PEOPLE WHO
WANT THEIR HOUSE CLEANED. JUST ABOUT ANYTHING THAT THEY
CAN GET THEMSELVES INTO. MARISSA: THERE ARE MILLIONS OF
UNDOCUMENTED IMMIGRANTS WHO
WORK IN THE UNITED STATES WHO
DON’T HAVE ANY LEGAL DOCUMENTS
TO DO IT.>>THERE ARE EMPLOYERS WHO WILL
HIRE THEM WITHOUT ANY
DOCUMENTATION, JUST PUT THEM TO
WORK. THERE ARE EMPLOYER WHO IS WILL
HIRE THEM THINKING THEY ARE
DOCUMENTED BECAUSE IT’S
RELATIVELY EASY TO BUY A FAKE
EMPLOYMENT CARD AND SOCIAL
SECURITY NUMBER TO WORK WITH. MARISSA: ACCORDING TO STUDIES
FROM THE
PEW RESEARCH INSTITUTE THERE ARE
ALMOST EIGHT MILLION WORKERS IN
THE UNITED STATES WHO ARE
UNDOCUMENTED. SOME RECEIVE WHAT’S CALLED
UNREPORTED EMPLOYMENT OR THEY’RE
PAID UNDER THE TABLE. WE SPOKE TO SEVERAL ALBUQUERQUE
BUSINESSES WHO HIRE PEOPLE OFF
THE BOOKS, BUT NOT ONE AGREED TO
GO ON CAMERA TO TALK ABOUT
IT.>>NOBODY WANTS TO ADMIT THERE
ARE
BREAKING THE LAW. TO FACE FINES AND PENALITIES
FROM THE U.S. GOVERNMENT. MARISSA: FINES BUSINESSES CAN
FACE DEPEND
ON HOW MUCH THE EMPLOYER KNOWS
ABOUT THE WORKER’S HISTORY OR IF THEY’VE GOTTEN IN TROUBLE FOR
DOING IT BEFORE.>>ON YOUR FIRST OFFENSE IT CAN
RANGE FROM ABOUT $560 TO ABOUT
4500. MARISSA: THE SECOND TIME?>>YOUR SECOND OFFENSE STARTS AT
$4,000 AND END AT $11,000. MARISSA: AND THE THIRD TIME.>> IT STARTS AT $6700 AND ENDS

UNDOCUMENTED WORKERS WERE

LIKELY THE COMPANY IS FACING BIG

Hints and tips for working with interpreters

An interpreter is a person who coveys orally the meaning of the spoken word to another. You can use interpreters more effectively and acheive better communication with a non-english speaking client by ensuring both you and your client understand the role of an interpreter. I like to make a doctors appointment please. Ok, when would you like your appointment to be? I would like to see the doctor on Tuesday please. Yes, we can book you in for Tuesday, would Tuesday morning be OK? Yes, that’s fine, Tuesday morning is OK. The interpreters role is to accurately and appropriately convey the whole message from one language to another. To allow the interpreter to do this you need to pause often to allow time for the interpreter to interpret and for you client to respond. You should also speak directly to your client for example, in this senerio the receptionist asks the client when you would like the appointment to be. Always make your client the centre of your attention regardless of whether the interpreter is in the room with you. In an on-site interpreting situation speak directly to your client, and maintain eye contact with your client, not the interpreter. You can arrange seating to facilitate communication between you and your client. If you are using an on-site interpreter a triangular seating arrangement is ideal. When using an interpreter your role is to conduct and manage the interview. It is your responsibility to ensure a free-flow of communication interview The first step in any interpreting situation is to introduce yourself to the interpreter and to brief the interpreter on the situation. As part of the briefing you can describe the type of telephone you are using it will also allow the interpreter to introduce themselves to the client Hello, my name is Mrs Edwards and I am the high school maths teacher and I am currently here with Mrs Aden Mrs Adens son Dennis is in one of my maths classes and Mrs Aden is here today for a parent-teacher interview. Right, OK Could you please introduce yourself Ok, we are ready to go – go ahead please. Wonderful Great, thank you for coming Mrs Aden, how are you? You can assist the interpreter to accurately recount what you say by using some simple strategies. Keep senetences short, limited to one or two ideas per sentence. Use simple language and avoid jargon and pause often to allow time for interpreting. Be patient with the interpreter process. Sometimes one short sentence in english may require several sentences in the other language. My son wants to go to university and study accounting. Are his grades good enough or for that, or should Dennis be doing more homework you think? OK, well I will have to answer that in two parts. Firstly Dennis is receiving excellent results in all tests and assignments he’s actually one of the best students in his class. And as he is receiving such good results I dont think it is necessary for him to do more homework. If he continues to work hard in class I think he wont have a problem. getting into an accounting course Very good news, thank you, fantastic news You should maintain eye contact with your client to show that they are the centre of attention. however, eye contact is a great example of how cultural difference in body language can effect communication In some cultures looking someone in the eye indicates honesty and straight-fordness. while in others it can be seen as challenging and rude. It helps to be aware of these differences when engaging and interpreter. In any interpreting situation your role is to conduct and manage the interview. Make your client the centre of your attention and speaking to them directly. To asist the interpreter keep sentences short and simple and pause often. By utilising the tips presented you can help bridge the communications between you and your client.
