The Fight for Mom’s House

– [Narrator] On November
18th, 2019, Moms 4 Housing, a group of working, homeless mothers took over a vacant house owned
by Wedgewood, Incorporated. Wedgewood was built on a
property-flipping business, and has specialized in the acquisition of distressed residential real estate. – My name is Dominique Walker. I am one of the co-founders
of Moms 4 Housing. The goal of our organization
is to reclaim houses back into the hands of the community and to house unsheltered
moms and children. There is four vacant houses for every one homeless person in Oakland. – We are reclaiming this house from a billion-dollar corporation who bought this house
at a foreclosed price. It has been vacant for two years while people are living out on the street. – We felt like this was
necessary to pick this fight, even when I personally tried to go through the proper channels to get help to move and be
able to pay these rents. They’re still not affordable. It’s also like it was up
to us to organize ourselves to be able to have housing. – [Narrator] In the last two years, homelessness in Oakland
has increased by 47%. Oakland is currently
experiencing a construction boom. In just a few years, thousands of luxury units have
been built across the city, but with average rental rates rising to nearly 3,000 a month,
there are few or no options for most people looking for housing. – Just talked about these
high-rises that are going up all over our city. As this asks, “Do you
know who lives in them?” You know what the truth to the answer is? – What? – That between 40 all the way up to 60% of those units are empty. – There are safe cities,
a thousand folks sleeping on the streets, and that’s
not even accounting for all of the unhoused people. In housing, insecure, homelessness, affects your mental health,
brain development in children, their physical health, and 28% of the homeless population now in Oakland, so under the age of 18. I have a one-year-old and a four-year-old. She’ll be five on Saturday. They have been so happy to
have a place to call home. That’s our fridge, stove, kitchen area. We had to do a lot of fixing up this house and we’re still working on it. This house was not kept up to code. My children have been so
excited to be sheltered. My one-year-old start walking
since we’ve been in the house, and he’s had a baby doll
where he can crawl around and stand up and start to
take those first steps, and he did that here. This house was owned by Wedgewood, a company that is a displacement machine. They’re composed of five
different companies. They all play overall in the
direct displacement of people. – We’re taking a stand, and
it doesn’t end with one house. We want to take Oakland
back from our speculators. (crowd cheers) we’re not gonna stop organizing these ’til we all have shelter. – [Narrator] It did not take long before the moms found an
eviction notice on their door. The notice was not addressed to them but to the previous owner. Moms 4 Housing went to court
to challenge the eviction. – Today, we’re claiming
right to possession because this land does not have to be back in community control. – We just stopped the sheriff from evicting tomorrow morning. – The eviction has been stopped. (all cheer and applaud) – We just served the sheriff’s
department with a document that’s called a claim
of right to possession, which is a document that
basically stops any eviction until a court has a hearing deciding whether the person who
filed it had a claim. We were able to file it because this is a post-foreclosure eviction that had nothing to do with
moms actually living there and they’d served the wrong people. It’s a temporary victory,
but it’s an important one. – [Narrator] Moms 4 Housing
wanted Wedgewood to donate or sell the property to the
Oakland Community Land Trust, a not-for-profit organization that buys residential real estate to provide permanently affordable housing. – The Oakland Land Trust
is willing to buy it. The issue is, the landlords won’t do it, and that is the biggest problem, is that we have the resources
to turn a lot of these housing into affordable housing,
but these landlords prefer to just make money, gobs of money, instead of housing people. – [Narrator] Moms 4 Housing
used the extra time they created by delaying the eviction to continue to build strong community
support for their actions. – Right now, we’re
canvassing the neighborhood to gather support, so we hope to gain the
support of all our neighbors. We know when we canvassed
this area earlier, that we had a lot of support
in this neighborhood, so we want to post signs of
support to save Moms House. – We’re trying to get
as many of these signs in people’s windows. – [Narrator] On December 30th,
2019, Moms 4 Housing appeared in Alameda County Superior
Court to defend a motion for claim of right to possession on the basis that
housing is a human right. – We’ve worked multiple jobs. We pay taxes into this city. We barely get the time
to spend with our kids because we’re trying to make
sure they have a stable home, so it’s really hard
for us to keep focusing and moving forward with so
many blocks in our path, but we are hard-working moms and all of us hold three
jobs just to make ends meet. – So, there was a hearing
before Judge McKinney in the court in Hayward today,
and he said he’s gonna take under advisement, but he
didn’t issue a ruling, so what the attorneys for the
Moms and the moms themselves and the hundreds of people that showed up to support them today in court, what they’re hoping is that
the judge will recognize that the courts, historically,
have occasionally intervened, not only to interpret the
law, but to change the law. – [Narrator] On January
10th, 2020, the judge ruled that Moms 4 Housing had no
valid claim to possession of the home and that they could be evicted within five business days. – I’m not going anywhere. Wedgewood should give us this house. All the harm that they’ve
created throughout the world, instead of trying to evict us, they should be trying to
help come up with solutions to end homelessness, or their part in it. – [Crowd] Stop the eviction! We won’t move! Stop the eviction! We won’t move! Stop the eviction, stop the sweeps. Homes for all is what we– – We just got word that the
sheriffs were on their way to evict Moms 4 Housing, and
so, we sent out a text blast to over 1800 people and that
was maybe 15 minutes ago. As you can see, we’ve got
hundreds of people showing up. – [Crowd] Stop, no! Let us grow! They know this! They know this! No, cops, no! – Thank you for your support! (crowd cheers) – I don’t even had a word. I just know that it’s
necessary what we’re doing. Look at the response. That should let you know
that we’re doing exactly what we’re supposed to be doing. People that are out here, the
community, has had enough. – [Crowd] Go back, go
back into their minds! Go back, go back, go
back into their minds! Go back, go back, go
back into their minds! – The sheriff had plans
to run up here tonight. It hasn’t happened. They were on the five o’clock news saying that they would be indoors any minute, and then they had another person here, saying that they were coming in at seven, and they didn’t, so I
think they understand, like Dominique said, how to sound it down. – Is that it?
(crowd cheers) So, we got report that it was
on CNN that the sheriff said, “There would be no entry tonight.” (crowd cheers) That is definitely reason for applause, and at the same time, we
don’t trust the sheriff. (crowd jeers) – [Narrator] On January 14th,
2020, at approximately 5:30 in the morning, the Alameda
sheriffs forced the door open with a battering ram. – You’re gonna put it back down. (police and woman muffle each other) – They’re still ramming the door. They’re still ramming the door. – [Narrator] Two of the mothers and two supporters were arrested. – I know you don’t.
– Sleeping on your own? – [Mother] I wouldn’t let
my kids know if I did. – What’s this, what’s your name? – Officer–
– Lyden. – Lyden.
– Lyden. – Officer Lyden and Officer Corey. – I got ’em.
– Thanks. Sorry.
– Thank you. – Stewart?
– Yes, ma’am. – What happens next? What’s your next movement? This is only a piece of it. We’re gonna be out–
– You’re all under arrest. That’s why we come helping grip– (many talk over each other) (ambient noise) – They were? – [Narrator] They came in
an armored personnel carrier and eight officer teams, in a show of military-like force
to evict the mothers. – That’s just stalling, and you will break. – They all brought tanks,
tanks, AR-15s, fully loaded, for babies! Fully loaded, for babies! For babies, for babies. – Whose house?
– Moms House! – Whose house?
– Moms House! – Whose house?
– Moms House! – Whose house?
– Moms House! – Whose house?
– Moms House! – Whose house?
– Moms House! – Whose house?
– Moms House! – Whose house?
– Moms House! – Whose house?
– Moms House! – Ay!
(crowd cheers) They may have arrested
the mothers tonight, but this was a win. This is a win.
– That’s right. – 50-plus days.
– All right! – 50-plus days, mothers
and babies off the street. This is a win, and there will be more wins. – We no charge like food,
clothing, and shelter. Sometimes they become cliches. Well, these are concrete
reality that we gotta relate to. We also, we create. We cannot afford to censor it. We respect no colonial borders. We will connect these
cases with state to state, city to city, ’til these cases, these bases are connected,
all over the world. We’re gonna do it if we knew
that it’s an occupying army. An occupying army. You all said, it’s not just to protect. It’s a land grab. – [Crowd] Shame on you! Shame on you! Shame on you! Shame on you! Shame on you! Shame on you! Shame on you! Shame on you! Shame on you! Shame on you! – Today, this morning,
the sheriffs came in. They came in like a army
for mothers and babies. They did this strategically
while we were on Democracy Now! I’m angry that my
sisters are in handcuffs. – Thank you so much.
– I know. – The majority of the people living on these streets are black people, and that is directly
connected to the history of slavery and Jim Crow in America. Seven out of ten people on the streets, it might be eight out of
ten now, are black people. – This is just a house. Moms House is wherever we are,
wherever we’re organizing. This is becoming a movement. They’re never gonna contain it. – Whose house?
– Moms House! – Whose house?
– Moms House! – Whose house?
– Moms House! – Whose house?
– Moms House! – Whose house?
– Moms House! – Whose house?
– Moms House! (contemplative music)

Going into 2020: Our Work in Review

Young Americans took to the streets today They are calling this the largest youth lead protest since the Vietnam War era This is more than just one day, one event, then moving on. This is a movement. Stand up, speak up, register to vote. If you listen real close, you can hear the people in power shaking. What each of us does may not seem like much, because in important ways it isn’t much. But when many people do this work together they can form a critical mass that is anything but insignificant. Especially in the long run. I’m here because I want to have a better understanding of the principles of organizing. I decided that it was time for me to stop sitting back and waiting for all of these adults to make change, and it was time for me to step up and make that change within my community and start the march at my school. I’ve gained a lot of new connections with prominent activists across the country and a new understanding of what it takes to be an organizer and and the inclusion necessary to make real change happen. One, change the standards of gun ownership. Create a federal licensing program that promotes responsible gun ownership. Two, reduce the rate of gun deaths and injuries by 50 percent in just 10 years by using all of the resources at our disposal. Three, accountability. Hold the gun lobby and gun industry accountable for decades of illegal and reckless behavior that puts us all at risk. Four, name a director of gun violence prevention that reports directly to the President and who will operationalize the federal government to meet our goals. Five, generate community based solutions by funding groups striving to save lives in their specific communities. Six, empower the next generation. Automatically register all eligable voters when the turn 18.

Peaceful Protesters Arrested During Occupation Of Senate Office

SEVERAL MEMBERS OF THE NAACP
HAVE BEEN ARRESTED AFTER THEY STAGED A VERY PEACEFUL
PROTEST IN THE MOBILE, ALABAMA OFFICE OF JEFF SESSIONS. HE WAS DONALD TRUMP’S PICK
FOR ATTORNEY GENERAL AND UNDERSTANDABLY, THERE ARE A
NUMBER OF MEMBERS OF THE BLACK COMMUNITY WHO ARE NOT
HAPPY WITH THAT PICK BECAUSE OF HIS COMMENTS ABOUT THE BLACK
COMMUNITY IN THE PAST. MEMBERS OF THE NAACP STAGED THIS
PROTEST. WE HAVE VIDEO OF IT PROVING
HOW INCREDIBLY QUIET AND PEACEFUL IT REALLY WAS, BUT
LET ME SHOW YOU EXACTLY HOW MANY PEOPLE GOT ARRESTED AND WHO
IT INCLUDED. THE ARREST OF FIVE MEN AND
ONE WOMAN INCLUDED NAACP PRESIDENT CORNELL W. BROOKS. THEY FACE CHARGES OF CRIMINAL
TRESPASS IN THE 2ND DEGREE AND THAT’S ACCORDING TO
THE POLICE IN THE AREA. MUG SHOT SHOWS WHO WAS ARRESTED,
ONE OF WHICH WAS A WHITE DUDE. THERE HE IS. YOU CAN BE PART OF THE NAACP
AND BE WHITE. EVERYBODY GO JOIN. TOTALLY. HELLO, THAT ONE WOMAN. SHE PRETENDED LIKE SHE WAS
BLACK, BUT STILL. MOVING ON, IF YOU ARE
WONDERING WHAT IT IS THAT THEY ARE ASKING FOR DURING THIS
PROTEST, CORNELL BROOKS SAID THE FOLLOWING: WE ARE ASKING
THE SENATOR TO WITHDRAW HIS NAME FOR CONSIDERATION AS
ATTORNEY GENERAL, FOR THE PRESIDENT-ELECT DONALD TRUMP TO
WITHDRAW THE NOMINATION. IN THE MIDST OF RAMPANT VOTER
SUPPRESSION, THIS NOMINEE HAS FAILED TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE
REALITY OF VOTER SUPPRESSION WHILE PRETENDING TO BELIEVE IN
THE MYTH OF VOTER FRAUD. I’M GOING TO GIVE YOU A LITTLE
BIT OF INFORMATION AND CONTEXT ABOUT JEFF SESSIONS AND HIS PAST
INVOLVING RACIAL BIAS BUT BEFORE WE DO THAT, JUST TAKE A LOOK AT
THIS VIDEO JUST TO GIVE YOU A SENSE OF WHAT THE ATMOSPHERE
WAS LIKE DURING THIS PROTEST. WE THANK YOU FOR THE
OPPORTUNITY, FOR THE NAACP FOR STANDING UP FOR THE
VOICES OF THOSE WHO ARE MARGINALIZED, FOR THOSE WHO HAVE
BEEN LEFT OUT, FOR THOSE WHO HAVE BEEN CAST ON THE SIDE. ALLOW US, GOD, TO GO
FORTH IN YOUR NAME, THAT WE WILL RISE AND STAND UP ON THE TRUE
MEANING OF YOUR WORDS, THAT JUSTICE WILL FLOW DOWN LIKE
WATER AND RIGHTEOUSNESS LIKE A MIGHTY STREAM. THIS WE ASK IN YOUR NAME, AMEN. SO THIS WAS AN ACT OF CIVIL
DISOBEDIENCE. AS SOON AS THE POLICE SHOWED UP,
SHOOK THEIR HANDS AND SAID THIS WAS MEANT TO BE PEACEFUL AND
STATED WHAT THEY WERE THERE FOR AND YOU SEE HOW IT ALL ENDED. I DON’T KNOW WHAT YOU WERE
TALKING ABOUT. I SAW A BUNCH OF ANGRY BLACK MEN. TALKING ABOUT HOW THE FLOOD
SHOULD COME AND WRECK THE PLACE. I BELIEVE THAT WAS A FLOOD OF
RIGHTEOUSNESS. THAT IS HOW YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO
DO CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE. THAT IS FANTASTIC AND AS I SAW
IT I THOUGHT, MAN, I THINK WE’RE GOING TO GET SOME
RECORD-BREAKING CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE FOR THE NEXT FOUR
YEARS. FOR THE FOLKS OUT THERE THAT KEEP
SAYING GIVE TRUMP A CHANCE, HIS CABINET PICKS ARE AN ACTION YOU
ARE ALLOWED TO JUDGE. IT IS NOT LIKE HE HASN’T DONE
ANYTHING YET. NO, HE PICKED A WHOLE BUNCH OF
PEOPLE. THAT IS ACTION, THAT IS AN
INDICATION OF WHICH DIRECTION HE IS GOING TO GO. FOR EXAMPLE, IF HE HAD PICKED AS
HIS SECRETARY OF TREASURY, BERNIE SANDERS, I THINK A LOT OF
REPUBLICANS WOULD’VE BEEN LIKE… THEY WOULD BE UPSET. FORGET BERNIE SANDERS
BECAUSE A LOT OF REPUBLICANS ACTUALLY LIKE
HIM, IF HE PICKED HILLARY CLINTON AS A SECRETARY OF
TREASURY. I THINK EVERYONE WOULD BE A
LITTLE OUTRAGED. BUT WOULD YOU BE ALLOWED
TO JUDGE HIM ON THAT? OF COURSE YOU WOULD. THE QUESTION THEN IS SHOULD WE
JUDGE JEFF SESSIONS AND I THINK IT IS A COMPLICATED ONE. THERE ARE A COUPLE DIFFERENT
ELEMENTS HERE. THERE IS WHAT HE HAS SAID IN THE
PAST AND HOW BAD IS IT, ARE YOU GOING TO HOLD IT AGAINST HIM, WE
WILL GET TO THAT ONE SECOND. THERE IS SOME OF THE POLICIES
THAT THEY JUST DISAGREE WITH. THERE I DON’T AGREE WITH THE
PROTESTERS. THEY SAY THAT AMONG THEIR
CONCERNS ARE THAT HE SUPPORTS A BORDER WALL. YEAH, THE GUY WHO SUPPORTS THE
BORDER WALL WON THE ELECTION. THAT HE IS FOR DRUG POLICIES
THAT FUEL MASS INCARCERATION, I COULDN’T AGREE MORE WITH YOU. I THINK IT’S HIDEOUS WHAT WE’RE DOING WITH MASS
INCARCERATION BUT THE GUY WHO IS FOR MASS INCARCERATION WON THE
ELECTION, AND HE IS SKEPTICAL ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE… TRUMP IS
EVEN MORE SO AND HE WON THE ELECTION. I WOULDN’T PROTEST THOSE BY
THEMSELVES. NOW WHEN YOU TAKE SPECIFIC
ACTIONS AND WE KNOW THAT HARMFUL CONSEQUENCES ARE GOING
TO HAPPEN, THAT’S WHEN YOU SAY
LET’S DO THIS BUT THAT DOESN’T HAVE MUCH TO DO WITH
JEFF SESSIONS. THAT IS MY OPINION ON IT. BUT THERE IS ONE POLICY MATTER
THAT MATTERS THE MOST AND IT IS ABOUT THE CORE OF WHAT
THEY ARE SAYING WHICH IS THIS WHOLE MESS OF VOTER
FRAUD AND IT ACTUALLY ALSO RELATES TO WHAT HE HAS DONE IN
THE PAST. LET’S GIVE YOU HIS PAST FIRST
AND THEN WE WILL COME BACK TO THE ISSUE THAT MATTERS THE
MOST. BACK IN THE 80S,
JEFF SESSIONS WAS ACCUSED AND CAUGHT SAYING SOME NEGATIVE
THINGS ABOUT BLACK PEOPLE, AND SO THESE ACCUSATIONS CAME
FROM PEOPLE WHO ACTUALLY WORKED CLOSELY WITH HIM, ONE OF
WHICH WAS A BLACK EMPLOYEE. SESSIONS’ FORMER DEPUTY, THOMAS
FIGURES, WHO WAS BLACK, SAID SESSIONS TOLD HIM TO BE CAREFUL
ABOUT WHAT HE SAID TO WHITE FOLKS AFTER FIGURES GOT INTO A
HEATED ARGUMENT WITH A WHITE COLLEAGUE. AND HE ALSO TESTIFIED SESSIONS
CALLED HIM A BOY ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS. ALSO HE SAID THAT SESSIONS HAD
JOKED ABOUT THE KKK SAYING HE THOUGHT ITS MEMBERS WERE
OKAY, UNTIL HE LEARNED THAT THEY SMOKED MARIJUANA. ISN’T THAT INCREDIBLE? WANTING TO GO AROUND
DISCRIMINATING IS THE LEAST OF IT. LITERALLY HURTING PEOPLE OF
COLOR IS NOT SO BAD, BUT YOU SMOKE THAT REEFER, YOU ARE A
BAD PERSON. YOU ARE NOT OKAY ANYMORE. ALSO A JUSTICE DEPARTMENT
LAWYER, J. GERALD HEBERT, TESTIFIED THAT SESSIONS HAD
DESCRIBED THE NAACP AND THE AMERICAN CIVIL LIBERTIES
UNION AS UN-AMERICAN AND COMMUNIST INSPIRED. I LIKE HOW I SOON AS THEY
DON’T LIKE SOMETHING, IT’S A COMMUNIST INSPIRED THING. THAT KIND OF TALK IS CRAZY. WHEN I FIRST READ THE THOMAS
FIGURES STORY A WHILE BACK WHEN SESSIONS’ NAME WAS FIRST UP, I
THOUGHT LOOK, HE WORKS DIRECTLY UNDER SESSIONS, IF HE PULLS THEM
ASIDE AND SAYS THOMAS, I HAVE A LOT OF RESPECT FOR YOU BUT WE
ARE IN ALABAMA. I’M TRYING TO LOOK OUT FOR YOU SO BE CAREFUL
WHAT YOU SAY AROUND WHITE FOLKS. I’VE GOT YOUR BACK, BUT BE
CAREFUL WHAT YOU SAY AROUND THEM, OKAY, THAT’S A TOTALLY
DIFFERENT CONVERSATION BUT THEN YOU READ FURTHER. THAT WASN’T THE CONTEXT. IT WAS HEY BOY, BE CAREFUL WHAT
YOU SAY ABOUT WHY FOLKS. YOU GOT THAT, BOY? THAT IS A
DIFFERENT CONVERSATION. THAT IS WHAT THOMAS FIGURES CAME
FORWARD DIET WASN’T LIKE HE WAS TRYING TO LOOK OUT FOR ME
BUT… NO, HE SAID HE CALLED THEM BOY ALL THE TIME. YOU MAKE JOKES ABOUT YOU LIKE
THE CLAN EXCEPT THEY SMOKE WEED, YOU KNOW WHERE THIS GUY IS
COMING FROM. THE PROBLEM IS NOT JUST THAT HE
THINKS THE NAACP, THAT IS THE PREEMINENT AFRICAN-AMERICAN
GROUP IN THE COUNTRY IS A BUNCH OF COMMUNISTS. YOU
MIGHT SEE WHY THEY MIGHT WANT TO PROTEST HIM THEN. THIS IS NAACP DOING IT. HE ACTUALLY THEN USES THAT IN
EXERCISING HIS POWER AND HE WENT AFTER THESE THREE GUYS WHO WERE
CIVIL RIGHTS WORKERS AND CHARGE THEM WITH VOTER FRAUD. WHAT’S MUCH MORE IMPORTANT IS
THE CONTENT IN THE SUBSTANCE. YOU COULD ARGUE ABOUT WHETHER
HIS STATEMENTS ARE RACIST, I THINK YOU WOULD LOSE, BUT YOU
COULD. HIS ACTIONS MATTER SO MUCH MORE. THE REALITY IS THAT VOTER FRAUD
IS NEARLY NONEXISTENT IN THIS COUNTRY. THAT IS A FACT SO WHEN DONALD
TRUMP SAYS THERE ARE MILLIONS OF PEOPLE VOTING
ILLEGALLY, EVEN REPUBLICANS ON TELEVISION HAVE TO SAY NO,
THAT’S NOT TRUE. IT DIDN’T ACTUALLY HAPPEN, THAT’S JUST A
FIGMENT OF HIS IMAGINATION. THERE’S NO EVIDENCE. YOU CAN
BELIEVE IT WITH ALL YOUR HEART BUT THAT DOES NOT MAKE IT
TRUE. JUST BECAUSE I WISH THEY VOTED
ILLEGALLY. IT DOES NOT WORK THAT WAY. WHEN HE GOES AND DOES THAT, HE
IS TRYING TO SUPPRESS THE VOTE AND USUALLY MINORITY VOTES,
AFRICAN-AMERICAN VOTES, AND NOW HE WOULD BE A GUY IN CHARGE OF
ENFORCING ALL OF THE LAWS IN THE UNITED STATES IF HE
BECOMES THE ATTORNEY GENERAL. THAT IS THE THING YOU PROTEST
HIM FOR. I THINK IT IS FINE FOR HIM TO
PROTEST ALL OF IT. I THINK THE MASS INCARCERATION
ISSUE IS A REAL ISSUE IT’S GIGANTIC,
I’M NOT SAYING IT ISN’T. I KNOW YOU AREN’T, BUT I THINK
SOMEONE LIKE JEFF SESSIONS WHO IS BEEN VERY CLEAR ABOUT THE
FACT THAT HE DOES NOT AGREE WITH MARIJUANA LEGALIZATION ON THE
LOCAL OR STATE LEVEL IS SOMEONE WHO IS LIKELY TO INCREASE THE
NUMBER, WHO IS LIKELY DENY CARE ABOUT STATES RIGHTS WHEN IT
COMES TO THE ISSUE. IF YOU WERE TO PREDICT THE
FUTURE WITH JEFF SESSIONS AS ATTORNEY GENERAL, IT WOULD BE
VERY EASY TO PROTECT THAT MASS INCARCERATION WILL NOT ONLY
CONTINUE TO BE A PROBLEM IN THE UNITED STATES, IT WILL BE
EXASPERATED. I LIKE THE WAY THAT THEY DID
THIS PROTEST BUT ONE FINAL POINT I WANT TO MAKE IS A CIVIL
DISOBEDIENCE IS GREAT. I AM NOT CALLING FOR VIOLENCE. I AM NOT CALLING FOR RIOTS. I AM NOT CALLING FOR ANYTHING
WHERE PEOPLE GET HURT OR DAMAGE PROPERTY OR ANYTHING LIKE
THAT. AT THE SAME TIME, THIS WAS A
PROTEST THAT IN MY OPINION IS GOING TO BE INEFFECTIVE
BECAUSE IT IS VERY CONVENIENT. IT’S CONVENIENT FOR THE
PEOPLE THEY ARE PROTESTING. THEY CALL THE COPS, THEY GET
ARRESTED, WE DO A STORY ON IT AND BY TOMORROW EVERYONE HAS
FORGOTTEN. THE IDEA OF PROTESTING IS TO NOT
MAKE IT AS CONVENIENT AS POSSIBLE FOR EVERYONE INCLUDING
THE PEOPLE THAT YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO BE PROTESTING. EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE WHEN WE DO
A STORY ABOUT BLACK LIVES MATTER GOING TO THE STREETS AND
THEY DON’T FOLLOW EVERY SINGLE LAW OR RULE, THEY DON’T
TAKE OUT EVERY SINGLE PERMIT AND PEOPLE LIKE WHAT YOU LOOK AT
THAT, LAWLESSNESS. BUT WHAT IS THE POINT OF A
PROTEST IF YOU ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO RUFFLE SOME FEATHERS
AND GET PEOPLE TO THINK? DO YOU SEE WHAT I’M SAYING? I DO, BUT I THINK I HAVE A
BETTER STRATEGY. HERE IS THE PART YOU ARE
RIGHT ABOUT THAT DEMOCRACY SPRING, WE HAD THE MOST AMOUNT
OF PEOPLE ARRESTED AT THE CAPITOL IN U.S. HISTORY. ALMOST NO MEDIA COVERAGE AND
ASKED THE MAINSTREAM REPORTER ONE DAY, I SAID, IF WE
HAD GOTTEN VIOLENT, WOULD YOU GUYS HAVE COVERED IT? AND HE SAID ABSOLUTELY. NO QUESTION ABOUT IT. WE WOULD’VE BEEN ALL OVER IT. OF COURSE. BUT INSTEAD WE WERE
NORMATIVELY PEACEFUL AND SO THEY ARE LIKE, THAT IS BORING. IT IS JUST A LOT OF PEOPLE WHO
WANT TO CHANGE THE GOVERNMENT AND THEY ARE WILLING TO RISK
THEIR CAREERS TO DO THAT. BORING. BUT IF ANYONE DID ANYTHING
PHYSICAL, THEY WOULD COVER IT BUT THEN THEY WOULD YELL AT YOU
DIE THERE’S NO WINNING. DOT SO WHAT’S MY PLAN? AS ALWAYS
IT IS RELENTLESSNESS. B AN AVALANCHE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS
AND I BELIEVE THAT WE WILL GET THEIR ATTENTION. WE ARE GOING TO DO IT THE RIGHT
WAY. I LOVE THIS PROTEST AND YOU KEEP
ON DOING IT, KEEP ON DOING IT UNTIL THEY CAN’T IGNORE
ANYMORE. THE PROBLEM WITH RELENTLESSNESS
IS THAT IT IS HARD. YOU HAVE TO KEEP ON GOING AND
OFTEN TIMES WHEN IT SEEMS HOPELESS. IN MY LIFE, I HAVE SEEN THAT IT
ALMOST ALWAYS WORKS.

Free Education Wins as Cooper Union Occupation Ends

spring wife’s this story I as low as long as we’re
talking about wins I think we had talked to some time ago
about or what was happening at Cooper Union
this is a up to a college or university in New York which was set up by Peter
Cooper years ago to provide free education for college students so that they were
not burdened by student loans at the Casa college
they go into professions not driven by the need to make money and sadly because the the the Board of Trustees in the
administration of Cooper Union wanted to be a an internationally recognized
university they decided that they needed to sell
off property that they needed to build a a a big
endowment so that they could have persisted each and that they would
have to charge students twenty thousand dollars a year to attend well after sixty five days a dozen or so guest lecturers i mean excuse me a after sixty five days fifty students giver take who had occupied the office love the president John shared
boroka in the in the it started in early May I have now won their battle in exchange for an invitation for all
sorts of people a but particularly students to get on a search for a different means in which
to fund the school it’s a big victory for the students they camped out for for sixty-five days and their perseverance I’ll was rewarded they’re gonna have an
opportunity to force the University the college I
guess to to find a different way of finding it
and hopefully return the the institution to its roots we need more of this we need more woo we Cooper Union can be an example
for the rest of the country as to why we need free higher education
