Scott Galloway: Growth Is the New Profitability

A loser: profitability. The most disruptive company in the largest economy, Amazon, is setting the cue for a new relationship between investors and companies. Simply put, vision and growth have replaced profitability. Amazon wasn’t profitable until 2001, seven years after it was founded, and since then its profits have been negligible. What happens when Amazon reports a big profit? Jeff Bezos calls senior management into a room and says you fucked up and greenlights a bunch of very expensive initiatives that will deliver against long-term advantage. This gestalt around capital formation has moved all the way down the ecosystem. Small companies now pursue leadership versus profits. Why? The market doesn’t seem to demand profits from quote-unquote innovators. A continued loser: Ad-supported television. There’s almost triple the amount of sports content than there was ten years ago, but fewer people are watching it. On top of that, tech giants are buying the digital rights to sporting events. Amazon recently purchased NFL streaming rights for $50 million, quintupling the bid from last year from Twitter. Facebook also signed deals in March to stream Major League Soccer matches and is in talks to buy the digital rights for Major League Baseball games. Prediction? In the next 24 months, we’re going to have one of the Big Four – Apple, Amazon, Facebook or Google – buy the rights to the Olympics, March Madness or the Super Bowl. This is one of the last bricks to fall from the wall protecting the industrial ad complex. The winner: Viewers, who will have more options to view content on their own terms and hopefully, for at least now, fewer shitty ads shoved down their throats. The losers? Those of us that wouldn’t have known unless we watched ad-supported TV that there was a treatment for opioid-induced constipation. Hi, I’m Frank, I take Movantic for OIC – opioid-induced constipation. I tried prunes, laxatives, still constipated. Had to talk to my doctor. She said how long you been holding this in? What the fuck. A winner? Reviews, which have fundamentally changed the way we shop. Most adults under 50 read online reviews before buying new products and one in four shoppers check Amazon reviews even when they’re inside a store. A third of online shoppers claim they won’t buy products that don’t have positive reviews. The average consumer rating on Amazon is 4.4 stars. We’re living in Lake Wobegon. All the women are strong, all the men are good-looking and now all the products are above average. This is the part of the episode where I usually make some snarky comment about my prostate or porn. However, many of us were having a difficult time coming up with something humorous with all the images coming out of Syria. We wanted to spend this time talking about some of the things we can all do to try and help. You can donate or volunteer at the following charities. The International Rescue Committee has rescue workers in Syria providing medical services and emergency shelter, Save the Children is addressing the emotional scars of Syrian children and Oxfam is helping settle Syrian refugees in over 90 countries. I’m going to spend some time investigating Lifeline Syria where you can sponsor a Syrian family. I will let you know what I find out. We’ll see you next week.

Alfonso Cuaron Signs Deal With Apple to Create New Series | THR News

Oscar winner, Alfonso Cuarón is making big moves in the TV world. Following a competitive process
of multiple outlets bidding, Cuarón has signed an
overall deal with Apple. Under the terms of the multiple year pact, he will create and develop
new television projects exclusively for Apple’s
forthcoming TV plus. The deal could be considered
a big win for Apple. Especially after Cuarón
delivered a hit for Netflix in the form of “Roma.” Cuarón, of course, wrote,
directed, and produced the film that was nominated for multiple oscars including best picture. (soulful music) As part of the new pact,
Cuarón will still maintain his nonexclusive deal
with Anonymous Content, and will partner with
them on select projects, while also continuing to
produce other projects with different collaborators. The “Gravity,” “Children
of Men,” and “Harry Potter” grad becomes the latest
A-lister to sign a content deal with Apple. Apple TV Plus launches November 1st with original “See,”
“Dickinson,” “For All Mankind,” and “The Morning Show.” – Ahhh! – Ahhh! – You walk out that door, you
are never gonna get back in. – For more on this story, head to thr.com. Until next time with The
Hollywood Reporter news, I’m Tiffany Taylor.

Google whistleblower fired after speaking to Fox returns to air

>>THEY ARE SO HOSTILE ONE WANT TO PUSH BACK AND SAY MAYBE’S AN OUTSPOKE BIGOT. BUT IF YOU PUSH BACK, THEY CAN TURN ON YOU INSTEAD. TRISH: THAT WAS MIKE WHACKER, A GOOGLE ENGINEER WHO TALKED TO US WITH THE OUTVILLAGE MOB AND A WITCH HUNT. HOURS AFTER THAT HE WAS SUSPENDED THEN FIRED FOR SPEAKING OUT. AND HE SAYS THERE IS OBVIOUS BIAS AT PLAY AT GOOGLE. MIKE WACKER JOINS US ALONG WITH FEDERAL PROSECUTOR, DOUG BURNS. WHAT HAPPENED? YOU CAME ON THE SHOW. YOU SAID SOME THING. THEN THEY SAID GOOD-BYE?>>THEY HELD ME IN FRONT OF A KANGAROO COURT. THEY ASKED ME RANDOM QUESTIONS. I’M TRYING TO GET MY BEARINGS. THEY JUST ASKED ME A BUNCH OF QUESTIONS. ONE OF THE WEIRD THINGS ABOUT IT. ONE OF THE PEOPLE I CRITICIZED. THIS PERSON WAS ALSO HELPING TO CONDUCT THE INVESTIGATION OF ME. IT WAS AN OBVIOUS CONFLICT OF INTEREST. TRISH: THEY HAD AN INVESTIGATION INTO YOU. WE KNOW GOOGLE EXECS TESTIFYING TO CONGRESS THAT THEY ARE FAIR AND NOT BIASED. WE RECEIVED A STATEMENT FROM GOOGLE ABOUT YOUR BEING DISMISSED. THEY SAY AND I QUOTE THAT THE INDIVIDUAL RECEIVED A FINAL WRITTEN WARNING IN MARCH FOLLOWING VERBAL WARNINGS RELATED TO A PATTERN OF THREATENING COMMUNICATIONS TO CO-WORKERS AND MANAGERS. THE BEHAVIOR HAVE CONTINUED. SO WE HAVE TAKEN ACTION. LIKE ALL WORKPLACES WE HAVE BASIC RULES OF THE STANDARD OF BEHAVIOR WE EXPECT AT WORK. WHEN THEY TALK ABOUT STANDARDS OF BEHAVIOR, IN YOUR VIEW, THEY WOULD PROBABLY DISAGREE, IS THAT CONFORMING TO ONE KIND OF POLITICAL THOUGHT?>>YES. IT’S BIZARRE. ON THE ONE HAND EMPLOYMENT THREATS ARE NOT THREATENING WHEN THEY COME FROM THE LEFT. BUT MILDLY HARSH CRITICISM FROM THE RIGHT IS THREATENING. TRISH: YOU FEEL LIKE THAT’S ALL YOU DID, POINT OUT SOME INEQUITIES?>>YEAH. IN THE FINAL WARNING. ONE OF THE ALLEGATIONS THEY HAD AGAINST ME IS SOMEONE CALLED ME RUDE AND DISRESPECTFUL. THIS ONE PERSON I REFERRED TO AS A TERRORIST. AND HE DOUBLED DOWN ON HIS COMMENTS ABOUT MARSHA BLACKBURN? SHE WAS ON THE SHOW THE OTHER NIGHT AND SHE IS A NICE LADY FROM TENNESSEE.>>YES, SHE IS. TRISH: THERE SEEMS TO BE A THEME WITH GOING. YOU LOOK UP CALIFORNIA REPUBLICAN, YOU GET NAZI. THERE IS OBVIOUSLY SOME KIND OF BIAS THAT GOES INTO THIS. IF YOU HAVE GROUP THINK AND YOU ARE PROGRAMMING A CERTAIN WAY, AREN’T YOU AT RISK FOR PUTTING YOUR OWN BIAS IN THERE?>>I NEVER QUITE UNDERSTOOD HONESTLY WHERE A GROUP HAS SCENE IDEA ONIVE INCLUSIVENESS AND INCLUSION AND YET THEY WILL SHOUT DOWN IDEAS THEY DON’T AGREE WITH. BACK TO THE CORE SITUATION. MIKE IS RIGHT, THERE IS A DOUBLE STANDARD ON MANY LEVELS. THEN THE STATEMENT FROM THE COMPANY IS THAT’S CORPORATE 101, 2, 3 AND 4. AND THEY CATCH IT WITH SOMETHING OTHER THAN THE IDEAS BEING EXPRESSED AND MAKING IT AS THOUGH HE DID SOMETHING WRONG. MIKE’S CLAIM IS THEY RELEASED HIM BECAUSE OF HIS IDEOLOGY. TRISH: YOU HAVE THE DOJ LOOK INTO ALL OF THIS. THIS MAY BE A BLESSING IN — IN DISGUISE. YOU CAN START YOUR OWN SEARCH ENGINE. IF THE GOVERNMENT IS SUCCESSFUL IN BREAKING GOOGLE UP, YOU MIGHT HAVE A CHANCE.>>IN TERMS OF NEXT STEPS I WOULD HAVE SOME ROLE TO PLAY, BUT A BIG PART OF ME WANTS TO GO

Ex-Amazon employee exposes harsh working conditions

CONNELL: AMAZON COMING UNDERFIRE. THE COMPANY FACING PRESSURE AS THOUSANDS OF EMPLOYEES ACROSS THE GLOBE ARE SPEAKING OUT AGAINST THE E-COMMERCE GIANT’S WORKING CONDITIONS. A SIGN THAT THE COMPANY’S INCREASE TO $15 MINIMUM WAGE MAY NOT BE ENOUGH TO SATISFY WORKERS NEEDS. OUR NEXT GUEST TOOK A JOB AN AMAZON WAREHOUSE IN INDIAN THAT. I WORKED AT A AMAZON FULFILLMENT CENTER. THEY TREAT WORKERS LIKE ROBOTS. EMILY WROTE A BOOK CALLED, ON THE CLOCK. FOR CONTEXT FOR OUR VIEWERS. YOU WORKED AT THE AMAZON FACILITY IN INDIANA, A CALL CENTER IN NORTH CAROLINA, McDONALD’S IN SAN FRANCISCO. THE IDEA WAS TO EXPERIENCE, QUOTE, UNQUOTE, LOW-WAGE WORK, WRITE ABOUT IT. YOU DID IN THIS BOOK, ON THE CLOCK. FOCUS TODAY ON AMAZON. TELL US WHAT YOUR EXPERIENCE WAS LIKE THERE, THROUGH THE CONTEXT, WHAT DO YOU MEAN, THEY TREAT YOU LIKE A ROBOT.>>SO WHEN IT COMES IT A ROBOT IT IS MORE LIKE THAT YOU ARE SORT OF HELD TO ROBOTIC STANDARDS OF PRODUCTIVITY, WHICH IN MY KAY WHEN I WAS A PICKER AT F-8, WE CARRIED AROUND A SCAN GUN. IT WOULD ASSIGN YOU TASKS. WHEN YOU GOT, EVERY TIME YOU SCANNED SOMETHING TO COMPLETE THAT TASK, IT WOULD IMMEDIATELY GIVE YOU A NEW ONE. THERE IS A BAR AT THE BOTTOM, THAT WOULD START TICKING DOWN THE SECONDS YOU HAD LEFT TO DO IT. CONNELL: THEY WERE TRACKING YOU, YOU WERE SAYING THE WHOLE TIME?>>YEAH. THE THING WAS GPS ENABLED. CONNELL: AMAZON HAS RESPONDED, I WILL TELL YOU WHAT THEY SAID IN A SECOND.>>I KNOW WHAT THEY’RE GOING TO SAY. CONNELL: HERE IT IS, LET ME GET TO IT FIRST. I WILL ASK YOU ANOTHER QUESTION. FOR SOMEONE WHO ONLY WORKED AT AMAZON FOR 11 DAYS, EMILY’S STATEMENTS ARE NOT AN ACCURATE PORTRAYAL OF WORKING IN OUR BUILDINGS. WE’RE PROUD OF THE SAFE WORK PLACES AND ALLEGATIONS ARE DEMEANING TO PASSIONATE EMPLOYEES, BECAUSE PRIDE AND COMMITMENT MAKE THE AMAZON EXPERIENCE GREAT. IN THE STATEMENT ONE OF THE THINGS THEY POINT OUT, YOU ONLY WORKED THERE 11 DAYS. WAS THAT ENOUGH TIME TO GET A TRUE SENSE WHAT IT IS LIKE TO WORK AT AMAZON?>>ALL RIGHT. SO THEY SAID APPROXIMATELY 11 DAYS WHICH IS A LITTLE SILLY. ALSO YOU KNOW, LIKE THE AVERAGE AMAZON, LIKE MONTH OF WORK IS 16 DAYS. YEAH, I GOT THE FLU DURING MY THIRD WEEK, I HAD TO TAKE A COUPLE DAYS OFF. LEFT A COUPLE DAYS EARLY. BUT, NO, YEAH, LIKE ALSO IT IS NOT REALLY JUST ABOUT ME. I TALKED TO DOZENS AND DOZENS OF MY COWORKERS HERE AND PEOPLE AT OTHER FULFILLMENT CENTERS. AND SHARED MY EXPERIENCE. IF THAT IS WHAT THEY WANT TO SAY. CONNELL: TALKED ABOUT BEING TRACKED AND FELT LIKE A, AS YOU SAID, LIKE A ROBOT. I WILL ASK YOU THIS, SIMPLE AS I CAN, WHAT’S WRONG WITH THAT? WHAT IS THE, WHAT WAS THE PROBLEM WITH THAT? WHY DID YOU FEEL IT WAS UNFAIR TO BE TREATED THAT WAY?>>I WOULDN’T SAY EXACTLY UNFAIR BUT IT IS KIND OF INHUMANE. LIKE YOU GET TO GO OUT FOR COFFEE, IF YOU WANT. YOU GET TO USE THE BATHROOM IF YOU WANT, RIGHT. TECHNICALLY PEOPLE WHO WORK AT AMAZON CAN USE THE BATHROOM. WHEN THEY DO, IT IS LIKE THEY’RE CONSTANTLY BEING TIMED. SO THERE ARE RATE DROPS. IF YOUR RATE DROPS FAR ENOUGH, THAT’S IT YOU ARE TOLD YOU WILL BE FIRED. CONNELL: EVERYBODY’S HABITS DURING THE DAY HOW MUCH THEY TAKE A BREAK, THERE TO TAKE A CIGARETTE OUTSIDE, GO TO THE BATHROOM, EVERYBODY IS TAKING THOSE BREAKS. AT THE END OF THE DAY, AMAZON’S BASIC POINT WE’RE TRACKING HOW PRODUCTIVE YOU ARE, WE NEED TO KNOW HOW MUCH WORK YOU ARE GETTING DONE. WE FACTOR ALL THAT IN. GOES BACK TO THE EARLIER QUESTION, WHAT IS WRONG WITH THAT?>>WELL IT IS, I THINK IT IS JUST A LOT THAN YOU’RE IMAGINING. I ENDED UP, I SNUCK A STEP TRACKER IN WHEN I WAS WORKING THERE. I WAS DOING BETWEEN 13 AND 16 MILES OF WALKING PER DAY. CONNELL: 16 MILES IN ONE DAY AT WORK? WOW.>>YES. CONNELL: HOW MANY HOURS DID YOU WORK THERE?>>LIKE A DAY. MY SHIFT WAS BETWEEN 6:30 A.M. AND 6:00 P.M. MELISSA: WOW. CONNELL: 12 PLUS HOUR DAY. YOU’RE PUTTING 16 MILES?>>NO, IT IS 11 HOURS AND A HALF HOUR LUNCH THAT IS UNPAID. CLOCK OUT FOR IT. CONNELL: SO WE HAVE TO WRAP THIS UP. WHAT DO YOU SUGGEST? WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE THEM CHANGE REAL QUICK BEFORE WE LET YOU GO?>>THAT IS THE THING. IT ISN’T JUST AMAZON. THIS IS THE ENTIRE SYSTEM. WE’VE GOTTEN SO GOOD MONITORING, TRACKING WORKERS IT STARTED TO BECOME LIKE A BELT THAT IS BEING PULLED REALLY TIGHT AROUND THE MIDDLES OF ALL KINDS OF WORKERS TODAY. AND IT IS, I DON’T KNOW, READ MY BOOK. I REALLY GET INTO IT WITH A LOT

Work-from-Home Jobs Report (FlexJobs), 5G in Europe, and a Digital Nomad Invasion of Bulgaria

Hello and welcome to another episode of Digital Nomad News – your source for breaking news in technology, remote work, and travel. I’m your host Kristin Wilson, the owner of traveling with Kristin and Digital Nomad TV, where we’re creating content to help you thrive in a location independent lifestyle. Our top stories this week include the 8th annual FlexJobs report, 5g rolling out across Europe Tokyo tests out a new teleworking scheme Nomads Cruise releases more availability on their 10th anniversary cruise and a digital nomad invasion of Bansko Bulgaria! Let’s get started In today’s top story the remote job site, flexjobs release the results of its eighth annual Super survey about flexible work. Some of the interesting insights from the data include 30% of the 7300 respondents reporting that they left a job because their employer refused to offer a flexible work option. More than half said that they’ve tried to negotiate flexible work in the past and 80% Said that they would be more loyal employees if their employers let them work remotely. The top four reasons that people say they are seeking flexible work include better work/life balance, Less stress from commuting, more time with family, and more time and cost savings in general These findings are consistent with the research and calculations I did for an article I wrote earlier this year for The Startup on Medium on the staggering amount of time that remote workers can save compared to their office counterparts – upwards of 1,000 hours per year. As usual, I’ll link to additional resources for every story that we cover in this video description. And if you’d like some tips on how to convince your boss to let you work remotely check out this video (above). In an interesting twist the Harvard Business Review published a story this week Asking “Is it time to let employees work from anywhere?” The answer, of course, is yes. In tech news, 5g networks are expanding across the European continent. Vodafone announced that they activated the first 5g networks in Berlin and Ireland this week The Austrian state of Carinthia also launched live 5g networks in their smart region this week Which also apparently boasts Austria’s first intelligent lighting masts, autonomous vehicle systems, and air taxis. Carinthia project manager Walter Prutej noted that they are looking to attract digital nomads to their quote, “beautiful landscape and superfast internet connection.” What more can a digital nomad ask for? Digital nomads, fully distributed companies, and let’s be honest, anyone with an internet connection Has been patiently awaiting the expansion of 5g networks worldwide 5g networks operate on speeds of up to one gigabyte per second or up to ten times current 4G speeds Tokyo has just completed a two-week Government-led campaign to attempt to stem traffic congestion ahead of the 2020 Olympic Games. More than 8 million people commute to work in Tokyo every day and an extra 650,000 visitors are expected for next summer’s Olympics. Up to 2000 companies were expected to take part in the initiative. And while this telework scheme was motivated to reduce traffic for the Olympic Games here’s hoping that this work from home experiment can become a more permanent part of the Japanese culture and Help its citizens achieve a healthier work-life balance Japan is notorious for having a very demanding Corporate culture – so much so that the Japanese have a word “karoshi”, which describes death by overwork. All that being said, Japan is a great place to visit and an even better place to live. So if you’re interested in what the digital Nomad lifestyle is like there Feel free to check out this brand new video on living in Japan as an expat digital nomad. Changing gears to digital nomad travel! The organizers of Nomads Cruise, the first floating conference for digital nomads, just announced new availability in their 10th anniversary voyage from Athens, Greece to Dubai. An estimated 300 digital nomads are expected to depart from Athens on November 29th Spending 17 days at sea with fellow remote workers before landing in Dubai for more information head over to nomadcruise.com And finally the ski resort town of Bansko Bulgaria is becoming a year-round destination for digital nomads. The owners of Coworking Bansko, the coworking space and community center in town Announced record-breaking numbers of digital nomads this summer. Coworking Bansko opened its doors in December of 2016 with just a handful of members, but on August 9th, they celebrated their 100th concurrent member at their weekly barbecue Coworking Bansko now has two convenient locations One at the base of Vihren mountain near the gondola and one in the centre of town Which is good to accommodate the growing digital nomad population Bansko is known for being the top a ski resort in bulgaria but it’s also a great place to visit in the summer with a lot of outdoor activities and nature. As a sometimes resident of Bulgaria and member of Coworking Bansko, I have plenty of videos about what the digital Nomad lifestyle is like there, what the housing prices are like, and About the low cost of living starting at only 500 euro per month. You can check it out here in this playlist. That’s all we have for today’s show Which story did you find most useful or interesting? Let us know in the comments and remember to share this episode with all your tech and Travel-savvy friends Make sure to subscribe and if you have a news tip Feel free to send it over to me at hello [at] Traveling with Kristin .com and we’ll see you next week. Ciao for now! That’s a wrap Haha, the dog…

Amazon employees protest on Prime Day in Minnesota

MELISSA: OKAY, GO AHEAD. PULL UP THERE FOR ME. WALKING OUT ON PRIME DAY. SUSAN LI IS ON LOCATION AT AN AMAZON FULFILL PLANE CENTER WHERE WORKERS ARE ON STRIKE. TELL ME ABOUT THAT. REPORTER: WE’RE HERE IN SHAKOPEE, 25 MINUTES FROM MINNEAPOLIS AT AN AMAZON FULFILLMENT CENTER. TWO DAYS OF PRIME DAY KICKED OFF. ALSO AN OPPORTUNE TIME FOR THESE WORKERS TO GET THEY’RE MESSAGE HEARD. WHAT MESSAGE THEY WANT TO SEND TO AMAZON IS ABOUT THE WORKER ENVIRONMENTS, THE PRODUCTIVITY QUOTAS IN PARTICULAR WHERE ONE WORKER WE SPOKE TO SAID SHE NEEDS TO FILL 600 BOXES IN 60 MINUTES, WHICH SHE CONTENDS IS HARD ON HER BODY PHYSICALLY AND STRESSFUL AS WELL. ANOTHER POINT THEY ARE CONTENDING WITH AMAZON, THEY WANT MORE FULL-TIME POSITIONS. RECENTLY THEY SAY AMAZON HAS BEEN HIRING MORE TEMPORARY STAFF. THEY WANT FULL-TIME JOBS THAT HAVE BENEFITS. THEY ARE NOT PROTESTING THE FACT IT IS ABOUT PAY BECAUSE AMAZON AS YOU KNOW MOVED UP THE MINIMUM WAGE TO $15 AN HOUR. THEY TOLD US HERE AT THIS FACILITY THE AVERAGE PAYS 16 TO DOLLARS WITH BENEFITS. WE CAUGHT UP WITH THE SENIOR SPOKESPERSON FOR AMAZON OPERATIONS, WE ASKED WHAT ABOUT THESE WORKERS, GOING ON STRIKE, WALKOUTS ON SIX HOURS ON PROBABLY ONE OF THE MOST BUSIEST DAYS FOR AMAZON? WILL THERE BE RETALIATION FROM THE COMPANY?>>WE HAVE ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY WHEN IT COMES TO RETALIATION. NO EMPLOYEE WILL FEEL THAT. WE RESPECT THEIR RIGHTS TO DO SO. WE ENCOURAGE THEM TO COME INSIDE AND HAVE CONVERSATIONS WITH US ON AREAS THAT THEY COMPETE FOR IMPROVEMENT BUT THE FACT THEY KNOW WE ALREADY PROVIDE GREAT WORKING CONDITIONS. IT IS, THIS IS ALL BEING CONJURED BY OUTSIDE ORGANIZATIONS WHO HAVE A BUSINESS CAUSE TO DEFAME AMAZON. REPORTER: AMAZON DID INVITE US IN. WE GOT THE FIRST LOOK INSIDE THE SHAKOPEE FULL TILLMENT CENTER ON TWO BUSY DAYS OF PRIME SALES. WE CAN’T SPEAK TO SPOKESPEOPLE ACCORDING TO ORGANIZERS. WE’LL GET MORE ACCESS TO THEM IN A BET. HEAR WHAT THEIR CONCERNS ARE. MELISSA: ASHLEY AND I WERE SITTING WATCHING, THEY HAD THE SAME QUESTION, THERE DOESN’T LOOK LIKE A TON OF PEOPLE BEHIND YOU. HOW MANY PROTESTERS ARE THERE? REPORTER: FROM WHAT WE SEE RIGHT NOW, 100 WERE EXPECTED. 1500 ARE EMPLOYED AT THIS FULFILLMENT CENTER. 100, 1500. LOOKS LIKES THERE IS AROUND 40 TO 45. SPEAKING TO SOME OF THOSE IN THIS PICKET LINE, ACTUALLY A LOT OF THEM DON’T ACTUALLY WORK AT THIS AMAZON FULFILLMENT CENTER. WE’LL GET MORE ANSWERS IN JUST A

Ride A Bike In The Sky — Mind Blow #77

To prove their batteries are reliable in freezing
temperatures Canadian Tire built a truck out of 11,000 pounds of ice. And burrito box is the world’s first burrito
kiosk that serves five different types of burritos at the touch of a button. Vsauce! Kevin here – this is Mind Blow. The SkyCycle is an urban concept that would
allow people to ride their bikes in the sky. Developed by architect Sir Norman Foster it
would consist of 220 kilometers of safe car free bike routes above London. And include
200 different entry and exit points, accommodate 12,000 cyclists per hour, and improve bike
travel time by almost 30 minutes.  Budgee is a robot designed to help with everyday
tasks and to carry your stuff around. Created by Five Elements Robotics, it can hold up
to 50 lbs and collapses easily for transportation with a 6-8 hour battery life. It’s intended
for a wide range of uses from helping the elderly and disabled to carrying all of your
stuff at an amusement park or mall. Sea Stars are able to see images with tiny
eyes located at the ends of their legs that can be cut off and regenerate. So Yeah. Pavegen is making energy out of footsteps.
By transferring the kinetic energy from a human’s step into renewable electricity that
can be stored for future use. The tiles are waterproof, durable, and made from recycled
materials so they can easily cover existing high foot traffic areas. Currently, their
largest permanent installation is at Kent grammar school where 24 kinetic tiles cover
over 5 meters of corridor. A new adhesive activated by UV light is being
developed to repair holes in blood vessels and the walls of the heart. Until now medical
adhesive glues were not able to withstand the pressure that a beating heart exerts and
didn’t adhere well to wet tissue. But by studying the viscous secretions of slugs and sandcastle
worms researchers were able to figure out how to form stable bonds underwater. Corning Gorilla glass created the worlds first
antimicrobial cover glass for mobile devices. It’s formulated to protect touch surfaces
from the growth of algae, mold, mildew, fungi and bacteria and works continually over the
entire life of the device. Aurora is a headband that claims to let you
control your dreams. It plays special lights and sounds while you’re in the REM cycle of
sleep that are supposed to induce lucid dreaming. The software in the headband senses when you’re
dreaming by measuring brainwave and eye movement activity. The user is able to pick out their
own specific dream signs, which are used to induce the lucid dreaming by making you aware
of your surroundings. It also sets a smart alarm clock that will wake you during your
most refreshed cycle of sleep. Mother monitors small connected sensors to
make your everyday routines easier. Motion cookies can be attached to almost anything
including water bottles to check if you’re drinking enough water, toothbrushes to make
sure everyone is brushing or pill bottles so you don’t forget your medication. Then
Mother puts all of the information into the sense board where you can then check out the
news of your daily life.  Onewheel is a self-balancing skateboard that
makes you feel like you’re on a hoverboard. It uses gyro and accelerometer sensors to
feed a processor that determines the exact speed to drive the motor based on how you
lean your body and because of the self balancing abilities they say almost anyone can learn
to use it within minutes. The power lasts for 4-6 miles and can reach up to 12 miles
per hour. MiP is a self-balancing robot that can be
controlled by hand gestures and/or your smart device. MiPs can dance, race, and battle each
